Few shots and a video clip from an IOW old boys trip to The Wave in Bristol. Thanks to Ali Mew and Bert for the photos, Joel for the video edit, and thanks to Jim for doing the driving. I might come back when I have a bit more time to talk about the wave itself in more detail (pics here are on the advanced left)

Big swell at Freshwater bay, Isle of Wight, with only the most committed surfers making it out back in testing conditions, with some super deep take-offs as the sets were breaking outside the rock-boil at times!
The Saturday night wave bouy readings (channel lightship) peaked at 22.5ft at 12 seconds with a solid 14ft – 17ft still showing for most of Sunday itself with fairly light Northerly (offshore) winds. Not saying this was a 14ft swell on the isle of wight, but i reckon we saw some solid 6-8ft groundswell at times and i saw plenty of double overhead waves being ridden.

It’s been over a year since the last surfing photo blog, not because i don’t love surfing or taking photos, but there’s just not usually time for both. Great light and great waves persuaded me to get the camera out again. The pics might make it look a bit tame at times, but there was some good surfing and great action from a strong local crew in testing conditions with the bigger sets way overhead. Friday 3rd January 2020 at Freshwater Bay, shot with a Canon 6d II with the 70-200 f2.8L lens and a 2x extender

It’s been a solid week of swell on the Isle of Wight with strong easterlies making for some “interesting” days on the SW facing coastline. Here’s a few photos from an early morning session at Freshwater Bay on Friday 14th December.
Good test for the camera too, shooting fast moving subjects in the gloom before the sun managed to peek through the clouds. It did OK after a while but the earliest shots are very grainy at 12,800 ISO (some might like the film-like effect, others will hate it)

Because of time constraints (from being busy at work and also surfing every chance i get) these blogs are getting further apart, and i’ve not got too much to say this morning, but i’m back with a bumper batch of photos from the last two days of a solid week of swell to hit the Isle of Wight around 13th-18th November 2018.
First batch from Saturday (November 17) afternoon at Compton Bay, around mid-tide on the push as the sun went down, and the second batch at Freshwater Bay the following afternoon (November 18 ..read more

(I could have gone with the alternative title = How a dislocated thumb probably saved me from snapping a longboard and/or having a near-death drowning experience ?
Photos from the morning of Wednesday the 18th April at Freshwater Bay from Charlie Cripwell and Paul Blackley when the wave bouys were showing something like 15ft with a nice long wave period (14-16 seconds).
Photos (taken by me) from lunchtime on Wednesday the 18th at Compton Bay when there were very few takers for the heavy closeouts (the wave bouys were still showing around 12ft and 13 seconds at this stage ..read more

A few shots from the early afternoon of March 11th 2018 (Mothers Day), shot from the window of a camper van whilst waiting for the second surf of the day. Not the greatest photos, or the best of the swell that day, but it was the time I was there and able to snap a few.
Got up at 4.45am to catch it first light, swell was peaking in the morning with 8ft at ten seconds on the bouys translating to some well overheard sets in a strong offshore / cross shore wind (which felt like the winds in fuerteventura but with added ice-cream headaches instead of sunburn). Good session with a couple of great ..read more

Long time no blog, so I’m back with a few pics from a fun little winter session at Freshwater Bay.
The day had started with a challenging surf at Compton fields in the morning, decent head-high waves and a cold / strong 24mph NW wind (cross-offshore) which held the waves up nicely but made going left almost impossible on my 7’6”. But some fun rights were to be had, the sun was shining and there was only two people in, sadly no photos as i was surfing!
Now normally one surf a day in winter is enough for me, but I was persuaded to come and have a look at Freshwater Bay in the afternoon, as the ..read more

Almost a year later and i’m now wrapping up my surf blogs from the Maldives back in October 2016.
Part three is just a batch of shots of me on my 7’6″ taken on a small-ish day at Lohis, the left hand home reef break of the resort island Hudhuranfushi. All photos by GoPro Ali Ahmed.
