Surf in Wyoming on twisted rockers, off set fins, varying rail shapes and alternative constructions.   Will Blum, talented on the ski slopes, beach breaks and more came in to design boards specifically to unpack the flowing opportunity of “The Lunch Counter” a wave he surfs in Wyoming on the Snake River.   Blum, a team rider with an open mind  looking to test designs on a wave  more consistent than most ocean breaks. It is an opportunity to explore design to help suit the joys and combat frustrations. Two designs tested, one a sustainable EPS epoxy construction and the oth ..read more

It was a snow storm in his bay and although the collaboration on the tools was well divided, his advantage was clearly in the air and yet still never before been seen... shaping in Australia with Hayden Cox.   The air was dry and the static made every particle adhere to the nearest surface and these fine cut polystyrene particles become an issue.   I prefer to shape with a dust collection in place and keep things clean and neat. It’s important to set yourself up to succeed when approaching a delicate task with fine subtleties involved through craftsmanship. It’s the lighting ..read more

http://stabmag.com/news/650-surfboards-and-shipping-to-south-africa/  photograph: Jimicane   The volume of boards made one feel disorientated. Picking up each one and carefully sending them off to sea was a fun collaborative effort within this project. The vibe was... actually emotionally draining. Making way for the positive tide.  Photograph: Britany Jay   Stay tuned for more on the start and stoke ..read more

They think we are giving surfboards, when its really the waves that will be remembered. To the young kings and queens in South Africa, may the ocean and your paths be rich. Full of joys no one can take. You can ride anything, the way you want to. What you can not do, is deny the joys this fascination for the sea may bring. Cultivate it, share your stoke. The Positive Vibe Warriors have created an opportunity to sew into the fabric of the surfing community in South Africa. The "Surfers not street children" and "Waves for change" are the organizations there that these boards being donated will ..read more

It was a special trip, a land with bounding animals and warm water waves filled with able water men and women. Friendly folk, early to rise and in tune with the current conditions. The whole government seemed to respect this sport of kings and coastal living bred an appreciation for the sea.  I shaped along side legends of the craft, in old factories and state of the art design studios too. There were some committed to what they had began doing 47 years ago and others at the cutting edge of materials and technology. What was common to all was the spirit of craftsmanship, a fascinat ..read more

Scenery and the thoughts left behind
Brink Surf

...one could tell he wasn't comprehending the science at play, but what could not be denied was the reality of the effectiveness. The change in scenery brought a warm perspective on the experiments underway back at the shore. As if adjusting ones eyes after exiting the dark, things came back into focus, surprisingly the same way. And although some things were dreamed to have been different, there was a comfort in knowing that tasks at hand were honest and aging like a fine wine, with seasons intent and times of patience prescribed.  I surfed the same board everyday for a week straight c ..read more

Ocean day abstracts

...we drove silently along the shoreline looking out to sea through the rain."It's like mom" he exclaimed in a respectful tone coming from behind his large white beard. All these years had proved what a teacher, class room, sanctuary and guardian the sea could be. The seats creaked as we bounced twice over the speed bumps and we watched the water saying no more.     Taking a swim to freeze time in a place where the dynamics at play can be so over studied in pursuit of design excellence that the big picture can be easily forgotten.    World ocean day, everyday.  ..read more

...with anger in her eyes and tight fists gripping the towel, she observed the scene of defeat. The tide continued it's relentless rise as the 80's were manipulated and yet gratefully seen as an era from whence we came and were not part of anymore. Insecurity would tarnish any hearts best song.  Panel "vee" down rail and volume through out. Twisted rocker and fuller heel side with a high apex. Short rail line and straight mid line into larger hip than toe rail and 4 degrees fin set in the "vee". Vissla's Cosmic Creek event. It's a tribute to the designs and shapes of our past with a gathering in place for a beach weekend some high fives and good vibes. With Hoffman fabrics print throughout the event site and branding it felt fitting to include it in the first place winnings. Hand foiled ply wood removable fins for future boxes and art details to suit. First through third received an abstract resin panel gloss polished and tuned to near perfection just like evey good hand made surfboard. The iconic heptagonal form housed the art and mechanical details set things up to look good for lo ..read more
