John Cunningham – the nicest man I knew

It is with great sadness that I must write this short blog post. My father, John Cunningham, who wrote the content for this website over many, many years was diagnosed with Motor Neurones Disease 6 weeks ago. He met this devastating news with dignity like I have never seen before. After the diagnosis he met every challenge with humility, never complaining and always smiling even though he must have been going through emotional turmoil inside. Sadly, on the 28th December my father suddenly passed away. He passed away peacefully surrounded by close family members. A few weeks prev ..read more

Seawater Quality

As has been often stated the number one quality requirement in the marine aquarium is seawater quality. This is logical to everyone (or maybe nearly everyone!). The number two, at least in the reef aquarium, is lighting. So let’s have a look at seawater quality. Obviously seawater is in direct contact with fish and corals and is the environment for them. Aquarists have no problems in checking seawater quality as there are plenty of test kits available for purchase. The test kits are not ‘scientific’ as they measure less accurately than scientific versions, but the kits are fine for the aq ..read more

There’s More Than One Marine Aquarist

Er, yes, I think anyone could work that out for themselves! The thing is, marine aquarists are not alone and there is much experience to be had and made use of. Problems can arise, of course they can, and any help available is more than welcome. Most households nowadays have access to the internet and this is the first place to go to when the demand arises. There are forums where questions can be asked. Others on the forum could have had the same or similar problems and could advise how they coped with it. Most forums are pretty reasonable and sensible – no, let’s be honest – daft answers a ..read more

Efficiency, Applicable To The Marine Aquarium?
Aquarists Online

No, we’re not talking about equipment. It’s right though, equipment does need to be efficient. For example, the skimmer, heater(s) and the like should be correctly sized and operating properly. We’re talking more personally, about the aquarium and the aquarist. Efficiency seems a strange word to use when the aquarium should bring peace and interest, but that is the word to use in this instance. Maintenance is the baseline here. When the aquarium is new everything is usually done on time. The aquarist is careful to complete each task carefully and completely. As time passes it becomes nor ..read more

An Easier To Keep Coral For The Reef
Aquarists Online

Many aquarists, new or existing, are moved to start a marine reef aquarium. Successful aquariums of this type are beautiful. The marine reef can house fish too, provided attention has been given to the maximum load. The number one requirement is high seawater quality (so the total fish load needs to be correct), and not far behind is correct lighting. A marine reef aquarium can be set up from the start, experience or not – just make sure all the parameters are met. Answers are easily found on the internet and in books (make sure the book is modern, that is, up to date by being recently publ ..read more

Sunshine For The Marine Aquarium
Aquarists Online

Marine fish come in all sorts of colours, some quite garish, others beautiful but more subtle. There’s one fish that is a ray of sunshine, catching the eye. The fish is the yellow tang (Zebrasoma flavescens) which comes from the Hawaii area. It grows to around 6ins (15cm) so is generally able to fit into some smaller aquariums, though proper attention must be given to fish load (aquarium carrying capacity). As always seawater quality must be high so the aquarist should have some experience, perhaps a year or so, as the yellow tang is sensitive to seawater quality. The fish is territorial ..read more

I Like My Aquarium

When very young I kept an aquarium with goldfish in. It facinated me to an extent but not to the extent that marine types do. Starting a marine aquarium was a very good move, it has kept me interested for many years. I have been keeping marines for about 40 years, having had several aquariums, one in-wall and others standing free. They have all been marine reef types and have had an improved success rate as time has passed. As time has passed so learning has continued. Mistakes were made of course but no fish lives were lost because of them. I recall with some sadness the loss of an Empero ..read more
