Hello all! I have been teaching art mostly in charter schools for the past few years. Next year I am going to a large public district teaching MS art. I will most likely have an hour of mild to moderate students (I am not at all good with education lingo, especially when it comes to special education, but I am learning!), and I want to make sure I have some really great adaptive lessons ready for them! I am hoping someone can recommend some great resources to help me prepare for all of my students! I don't really have any details about my new students yet but I just want to be as prepared as ..read more

Ultra thin markers

I have a lot of students who love to use ultra thin permanent markers to outline work. They don't last long because kids press too hard and bend the felt on top. They are also expensive. Anyone have a nice brand of ballpoint pen that could do the same thing? With a line the same size a thin permanent marker? submitted by /u/color_kween [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

what color should I use for the background? I tried dark blue with a bit of gray, nothing nice came out of it. I made another visualization with a png file. submitted by /u/CountDougler [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I am a certified elementary school teacher and a Certified Art teacher k-12 This interviewing process is so stressful. I can’t wait until I can find a job and be happy where I am. I just finished teaching elementary for three years and I got my certification this year to be an art teacher. So far I have been on four interviews and I had gotten one offer. But the school is not where I want to be. I had a gut feeling it wasn’t a good fit due to some things I noticed . I also spoke to the previous art teacher there and she told me absolutely not, which is why she leaving. I done this before wher ..read more

So long story short is: I am teaching k-8 art without an endorsement for it. Which they knew when they hired me. The school was unable to find anyone due to it being in a bad neighborhood. I have my PEL and an English Endorsement. So principal did some fiddling and put me in an “English class” (I guess). My plan was to take courses this summer and get a short term endorsement. But apparently it came to light and that isn’t good enough that I am taking classes this summer they need to post the job thus I am out of a job. The only way to prevent this is to take the 214 exam without having taken ..read more

How do you structure private art lessons?

I just recently started to take on an art student for private lessons… however, I’m not teaching art this year (teaching 2nd grade at a Waldorf inspired public charter school, so very arts infused, but not the same)…. Soo I’m a bit off with the art lesson planning. My student is 7 with ADD- she can focus with lots of redirection for about 35-40 minutes. Anyone have tips on how you have structured private art lessons in the past? Do you do one lesson/skill each time you meet or spread it out over a few lessons? Thank you! submitted by /u/Neither_Ship_185 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Let me start with a disclaimer: I am not an Art Teacher. I am a Teacher, currently working a Long Term Assignment in MS Math. Usually, I'm a substitute, and I float from school to school, and position to position depending on what assignments are available. I've done Elementary Art before, and with good plans, easy, simple skills and adequate material preparation by the Art Teacher, that was a joy, and I would not hesitate to take another Elementary Art assignment. The Littles are so much fun once they get immersed in the activity. But it's got me wondering. How many of these LIttle People ca ..read more

Back in my day... (plucks banjo a few times for effect) I was so hungry to make art when I was in school. I grew up in a state that did not value art education and defunded all of the arts during the 90s. I also went to a private christian school that didn't value art and so I had no art unless I sought it out myself. My mom was pretty good about getting me into art classes when I was younger and I kept making art on my own and with her while growing up. Even studying things I didn't really enjoy, if a teacher gave me a deadline for any project, by god, I got that project done on time. I wasn ..read more
