Is an Avianca LifeMiles+ subscription worth it?
The Points Guy
by Ben Smithson

Avianca’s loyalty program, LifeMiles, has always held a unique position for points and miles enthusiasts. The South American carrier has long been one of the best-value ways to book business- and first-class flights on Star Alliance partners such as Lufthansa, United Airlines and Swiss at the lowest rates. Avianca has retained a sensible award chart while other programs have moved to dynamic pricing — but the low rates come at a cost. LifeMiles is equally well known for its poor IT infrastructure and telephone support, so making changes or canceling an Avianca or partner flight has become a po ..read more

The Points Guy
by Tarah Chieffi

Google Flights is one of the top tools for finding the best possible airfare. The Google Flights search engine aggregates nearly all available flights based on your specified date and location parameters. Once you find your perfect flight, you can click through to book directly with the airline. You can even compare cash and award pricing by using a browser extension. As valuable as Google Flights is, there has always been one glaring drawback: the inability to see Southwest Airlines fares in the search results. Now, that has changed. As of Wednesday, Southwest fare results are displaying in G ..read more

Carnival Firenze cruise ship review: A guide to Carnival’s second ‘Italian Style’ vessel
The Points Guy
by Ashley Kosciolek

Editor’s note: TPG’s Ashley Kosciolek accepted a free trip to sail on Carnival Firenze for the ship’s naming ceremony and inaugural cruise. The views expressed below are entirely hers and were not subject to review by the cruise line. When Carnival Cruise Line first announced it was adopting ships from sister cruise line Costa Cruises for a product it now calls “Fun Italian Style,” I wondered, given Carnival’s usual vibe, if it was possible for the ships to feel even a little bit authentic. Would they be fun or refined? Luxurious or tacky? Carnival Firenze is all of those things — and that’s e ..read more

One of America’s newest airlines is marking its third birthday with a big announcement. Already operating up to 132 weekly flights and 18 destinations out of the New England airport, Breeze is plotting as many as 35 destinations over the next five years — and 200 weekly nonstops. The move could see the low-cost carrier expand its footprint to three international destinations — or U.S. territories, exp ..read more

The Points Guy

As we head toward what’s expected to be another record-breaking summer travel season, the White House is intensifying its war on so-called junk fees. In an interview with TPG, White House Council of Economic Advisers chair Jared Bernstein said the Biden administration has made some important progress on behalf of working families, but there is more work to be done. That progress includes cracking down on junk fees, getting airlines to agree to more passenger protections, increasing price transparency and holding companies accountable for things like resort or destination fees. “We’re not going ..read more
