I teach college, and a student that I’ve had in multiple classes over a few years just cheated on an exam. I’ve bought this student lunch before, I’ve helped this student make their college plan. This student has sought me out for advice so often, they’ve often helped me clean up equipment at the end of a long day. And they just cheated on an exam.
There’s no question it happened, there’s logs that I’ve seen and downloaded. Logs that would be so easy to avoid if they’d planned ahead of time, like I’m sure other students had. I’m under no illusions here, I’m sure there were other students who ..read more

Hey everyone! The copy machine is down. We called Susan, and she said it won't be fixed until next week. Anyway, since it's Friday...
What were some challenges that you faced recently? Anything that irked you? Maybe a co-worker is getting on your nerve? Class caught on fire because little Billy shoved a crayon into your pencil sharpener?

We need a 'Me Too' movement for teachers and other school staff. The baseline MUST be that the entire district staff is a team. When staffers request help, they are listened to, believed, and immediately supported.
We MUST rethink school district administration. Administrators, from principals to superintendents certainly don't work harder than anyone else on campus - at least not anymore. Most don't know more than any core teacher with five years of experience - so start them at that salary step with a fat stipend. They simply have a different job - nothing more.
Administrators are supposed ..read more

I raise my voice at my kids to get my point across when needed. A kid went home and told his mom I yell at the class.
The mom says she is going to report me to the credential people and get my license revoked. How likely is this?
The worst thing I have ever said to my kids is “hey, this is kindergarten behavior “. I have never “yelled” at my students.

Tomorrow is the first day of spring break for us. I've been teaching in the same room for more than a decade now and, every long break, I try to do a little something to the space to make it a place I enjoy being all day. A lot of my little improvements make it a nicer space for the students, too, but that's just an added bonus. I'm doing it all for me. I'm the one stuck in that room all day.
Over the years, I've accumulated a lot of teacher crap. My classroom has a huge built-in bookcase full of my teacher stuff, and I've added a second bookcase next to it, also now full of stuff. I've been ..read more

I think about this quote from The Wire a lot these days. Ironically, despite the line basically coming across as the king of cynical comments, internalizing it has made me better at the job and better at connecting with the kids.
As we get closer to the end of another year, I hope you have the outlets that you need to make you whole. Love all of you!

Student in advisory needs help with math homework. Other student tells her to ask me for help. She says "No...he's not good at math."
I say "Excuse me?" She goes "Haha...everyone says so."
Math has always been my strong suit since I was born. I'm amazing at it. Meanwhile, I make less than $40k/yr after taxes to sit and grade tests where seventh graders are giving me four different answers to a three-digit subtraction problem and can't remember how to convert a fraction to a decimal even though this is the third year we've covered it.
Like, why the fuck do I even try?

I have a kid who spends a lot of class sleeping. Not because they don't care, it's more of a "there's a lot going on there" type thing. They're honestly a great kid a keep good grades.
Anyway, at the end of the day they were talking a few of the other kids I already have decent relationships with and they were drawing cats for all of them. I also got drawn as a cat, too. It's not much and it was a super short interaction but it made me so happy. I genuinely didn't do anything but walk into the room and join a conversation, but it was great.
Have you had anything go really well this week?

Hi Everyone!
I am currently in part 1 of my 2 part senior semester. This is "clinical 1" in my school and I am student teaching twice a week and submitting 2 lesson plans per week to a supervisor from my school. My supervisor comes 3 times over the course of the semester to gauge my progress.
I have been going it alone with my lesson plans and I've been struggling with them. I don't get help from my CT. When I tell her I'm struggling with them, she tells me to bring them in and she looks at them for a few minutes, tells me my supervisor is being picky, and then walks away. Our lesson plans ar ..read more

So today I took a personal day, I had my daughter stayed home from school, and we watched opening day of baseball. A family tradition. Unfortunately our team lost.
My administrative team apparently didn't realize the importance of me staying home with my daughter to watch baseball. They messaged me several times asking if I could come in. Apparently they could not find a substitute and the assistant principal was stuck watching my classes.
I think it's good for her to be in the classroom every now and then. She's so out of touch with the teachers that it's scary. Plus, I left extremely simple ..read more
