I’m flabbergasted that he would even ask me, because he hasn’t been at school for 70% of the year, and was never here for more than 3 days at a time. For context, I teach Honors English, and I have a strict policy of only writing three letters of recommendation per year. This student has missed most of the school year, and has only passed because they did a credit recovery program for his failed grading periods. I’ve had multiple meetings about him getting dropped from honors, but counselors and administration refused because his mother was adamant that this student had severe depression, and ..read more

So we’ve got a kindergarten student who has a phone. He went to his cubby and pulled out his phone. He did a talk to text where he told his mom that he wanted a grilled cheese for lunch. At about noon his mom rolled up in her car and dropped off a sandwich for her son. submitted by /u/ArchonFlyer [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I teach elementary and have a fourth-grade student I've gotten along with well ever since I covered for the previous teacher with my role last spring. When we first talked, and I mentioned I was from NY, she gave me a whole opinionated speech on American pastors. I was impressed. She's part of the reason why I took a full-time role at this school. I suspect she developed attachment to or a crush on me over time and had to skip my class for a month or two because she had to be pulled out for getting too worked up. When I asked where she'd been, she wouldn't say. She recently told me some of th ..read more

33M - 8/9 Science, Cheer, Dance - Title 1 Cheerleading Final. Me: “We are starting your final! Band only shows up to the last two football games. So, I’ve created a list of songs for time outs that are from big college bands. We will play those over the PA system. You and a partner are to pick a song and choreograph a dance. You will then teach that dance to the team.” Cheerleader A: “Well I don’t like that you picked ‘x’ artist” Me: “Good. Don’t pick that one.” Cheerleader A: “I just don’t like what they stand for” Me: “Awesome. Don’t pick that one.” Cheerleader A: increasing in volume “They ..read more

Context: I work as a drama teacher in Belgium, so it is a voluntary class they take on schoolnights at a school that is specifically for drama. So Today I was informed one of my 8 year old students is dropping out through a very Blunt e-mail by her parents. They did not give a reason. Few minutes after I get an ominous sounding e-mail of my superior asking to discuss what I do in class because this kid is dropping out. We have a meeting set for monday, but I dare to ask if my superior knows more about this kid quitting. She says yes and does not want to tell me before our in person meeting. I ..read more

How stupid can someone be? Apparently, there is no bottom at Indianapolis Public Schools—specifically, at George Washington Carver Montessori IPS School 87. A teacher had been allowing students to beat a special needs child as part of his sick discipline strategy. He filmed the attacks, and even showed video to parents on one occasion. Here are two articles. Be warned: This behavior represents the worst aspects of humanity, and you may prefer to simply skip knowing the details. The article I am referring to can be found here: https://www.anxiousgeneration.com/ I read it and it was like looking into a mirror. Everything that was said I see as clear as day in my students (My school refuses to create a uniformed electronic policy). Here are some of the chilling quotes: We rewired childhood and created an epidemic of mental illness. After more than a decade of stability or improvement, the mental health of adolescents plunged in the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide rose sharply, more than doubling on many measures. The mass mi ..read more

I am a Computer Science student with experience working in AI models. Here are 2 tips for easily detecting if students are using ChatGPT for doing their homework. 1- Ask the students to constrain their answers to x chapter of a book or to x material. ChatGPT usually incorporate in his answers multiple sources and if these sources are outside from the recommended material you would know. 2- Incorporate in the homework questions that have no answer and give the students the option to say or choose they do t know the answer. ChatGPT by design will always try to answer questionsamd most of the ti ..read more

I teach government. I have to point out that there are a lot of answers that say the same thing. Many of my students cited President Abraham Lincoln. Cool. I'm good with that answer. He had to expand powers to keep the Union together. Hell, if they only said that I could give them a lot of points. Nope. The most commonly citied reason for his expansion of powers was, "When Lincoln passed the Civil Rights Act" 1 More month folks. submitted by /u/NotTheRightHDMIPort [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
