Dear Grif-friend, I hope you are having splendid weeks, revelling in the sunshine, reading a great book and delving deep into the Kate Middlegate saga. As I am sure you know, some of the best stories come in threes: The Three Musketeers, The Lord of the Rings, The Hunger Games and of course, The Lewis Trilogy. I had the honour of producing The Lewis Trilogy as my last gig as Griffin’s Senior Producer. I am so proud of the show and how we made it. Of course, I am biased, but I think we have achieved something remarkable. We have suffused the history of Australian theatre with its bright, rigoro ..read more

Dear Grif-friend,   Because our home, the SBW Stables Theatre, is so small, we normally hold two opening nights. This is the only way we can squeeze in all the people who need to be there: donors, reviewers, glamorous red carpet celebrities (Rhonda Burchmore hasn’t accepted an invitation yet but we live in hope). But for The Lewis Trilogy, this meant holding two opening night-and-days—and over Saturday and Sunday our hard-working cast undertook six performances in 48 hours.   It was a joyous but also sad occasion, knowing that this was the final such event in the SBW Stable ..read more

All your questions about The Lewis Trilogy answered! Do I have to see all three plays? The Lewis Trilogy has been written and directed as just that—a trilogy. Griffin strongly encourages you to binge this Australian extravaganza in the same way you would Angels in America, The War of the Roses, or Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. You can experience the full Trilogy in one of two ways;  Commit to a full day extravaganza in Louis Nowra’s very own beloved neighbourhood and book in to see the entire Trilogy on one day—commencing at 1pm on either Saturday or Sunday. Pace out your viewings by ..read more

Dear Grif-friend, Ang here—I’m the Content Producer at Griffin, which means I produce lots of content, including shooting and editing videos to pop on our social media channels, copywriting for everything from our season brochure to our website and putting together this very newsletter for you to wrap your peepers around! What can I say… I love me some juicy content! Especially when Griffin, my favourite theatre company in the whole world, is my beloved subject. I’ve worked here for six years this month and I’m proud to say I’ve loved every minute of it! Over the years I’ve seen colleagues com ..read more

Dear Grif-friend, Occasionally I feel like breaking up with theatre. Its demanding nature, all those thankless tasks that don’t get noticed, the expensive tastes when it knows there’s never enough money, the late nights, the drinking. Sometimes I think I’ve had enough and I want to leave. I’m done. But then theatre magic happens. Like last night, sitting in on the dress rehearsal of Summer of the Aliens by Louis Nowra. I slipped into the SBW Stables Theatre a little early so caught the end of fight rehearsal with the very talented fight choreographer Tim Dashwood. There were jokes and jibes ha ..read more

Dear Grif-friend, Hello! I’m Hayley and I’m new here… can I please sit with you? I joined Griffin in the new year as the Administrator, after spending the last 10 years working in stage management and props in commercial theatre. I must say I am LOVING the change. I’m still finding my feet here but I’m pleased to report that everyone is lovely! Which I’m sure shocks no one in our greater Griffin community. Anyway, enough about me. Last week we wrapped up our penultimate production in the SBW Stables Theatre, Jailbaby by Suzie Miller. A return season and a very successful one at that! I was luc ..read more

Dear Grif-friend, Let me be the five-hundredth person to wish you a very happy new year!! When do we stop saying it? Is it around this time? If you have an opinion please don’t hesitate to let me know. For me, it is indeed a happy new year, but I must admit I’ve lost all sense of time because I’ve had the all-consuming joy of being deep inside our ten-week rehearsal period for our upcoming Stables-farewelling spectacular, The Lewis Trilogy. As one member of our wonderful ensemble, the legendary William Zappa, put it: “We’ve got double the time to rehearse three times the work.” Rehearsing thre ..read more

Dear Grif-friend, This week marks a year since I started here at Griffin as General Manager. It also marks 53 years since the very first production at the SBW Stables Theatre took place (Biggles by Michael Boddy, Ron Blair and Marcus Cooney; directed by John Bell, for Nimrod Theatre Company). It sometimes astounds me that the remaining weeks and performances left in our beloved home are limited. Last week Griffin passed a rather major milestone, when the Development Application (DA) for our theatre redevelopment was lodged with the City of Sydney. Our proposal will be on exhibition shortly—we ..read more
