Unknown Bacteria Project help

Hey guys. I'm currently working on a project where my prof gave us 2 bacteria that we have to isolate and identify. Any help would seriously be appreciated because I only have a week left and can't figure out any tests to do. Our lab is super simplified and everytime I look up a test to do we don't have the materials for it. I've used the bergey's manual but it hasn't helped very much. Idk if this is the right sub to post this in but you all seem super educated on the topic so I thought I'd try. Heres my first guy and the tests I have done so far: I believe it's either Pseudomonas or Alcalige ..read more

Could this be microorganisms?

Took this photo from Facebook, that's a pecan praline(pecan+sugar), was left in the refrigerator for one month. What could it be? Doesn't look like a mold to me, nor bacterial growth, almost look like a larva, which is too weird for the refrigerator. Trying to make sure it's not any microorganism. submitted by /u/Southern-Alps-7169 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Planococcus or Micrococcus?

i need to identify this bacteria and i'm narrowing it down to these two genus but have trouble concluding which one. here are my data so far: gm+ cocci, aerobic, nonsporing, lactose +, catalase +, oxidase -, nitrate -, gelatinase -; kinda iffy about the motility test so i included some pics. i'm leaning more towards planococcus but the gelatinase result really throws me off, especially when the manual gives no info on different species of planococcus. i think the color is distinctive too. any help is appreciated ? submitted by /u/strawb3rrymilf [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Interesting microorganism for research paper
Reddit.com » Microbiology

Im getting into the field and want to write a research paper to deepen my knowledge. The paper is probably going to be 12-15 pages long and I want to write it about a microorganism found in soil, water or the human microbiome and has a very distinguishing feature about it (maybe causes a disease) and that has enough literature around it that I could fill the amount of pages I want to write. I guess the volume of the information on it should be huge and it should be already well researched. Helping select one specific microbe would be much appreciated! submitted by /u/Euodias_Coeur [visit red ..read more

Suitable Vessels for Culture Media Preparation

I work in industry and we prepare large-ish batches of culture media weekly (I'd say 1-2 liters per prep, 1-2 times a week). We prepare them in 1L or 4L Pyrex beakers on a hot plate with a magnetic stirrer on. However, I've noticed that the glass beakers often eventually crack near the bottom and we have to replace them more often. I suspect the cracks might be caused by the beakers being washed immediately after use while they are still too hot (for background, the persons assigned to prepare the media and wash glasswares in our lab are non-technical personnel and aren't very knowledgeable o ..read more
