After a lot of trouble with figuring out what to do with a trailer detailed in this post and with the awesome feedback I got from the community, I finally finished a trailer I am happy(ish) with. It took five months and a half, and I really struggled to finish it, but let's say it's done.
The game is still not out since I have to make the builds and the page for the free edition and the supporter's edition, but I feel like I'm very close!
Old trailer
New trailer
I really don't want to change anything anymore, but any feedback is very welcome for the future if nothing else.
Thanks for your tim ..read more

I attended GDC for the first time, representing my unheard of no-name studio, and thought I'd share my perspective for future searchers thinking of attending.
The purpose of the trip was to expand our reach by establishing new connections through general networking. We're moving beyond vertical slice and looking to start pushing the game more into the public eye.
Everything written below is from the perspective of a veteran game developer who thoroughly understands development but lacks experience in the secondary tasks of releasing an indie game: business management, marketing, press relatio ..read more

Whatever game mechanic I think about has already been done by other games. Which makes me concerned that my game might be too similar to those games. How do you guys come up with unique mechanics?

Hi guys,
I am learning SFML for writing a simple game.
I encountered one issue when trying to display text inside a rectangle. I wanted to display it in the center of the rectangle, but am not able to do so.
I read few posts online like this one and this one. They have mentioned something related to Origin and Local/Global bounds.
So far I have understood that text has to be rendered on a "baseline" to avoid weird behavior (jumping texts). Also, there can be some extra space above the character because of tall characters (like 'h', 't', etc.) and characters like 'é'.
I am not able to understa ..read more

As the title says, I don't know when to stop. Most parts of my game are finished. I have all mechanics, dialogues, music and other stuff, but there is one thing that I can't stop improving. Character models. I've spent over a hundred hours making everything besides models, and it's done. I've spent over 30 hours on a single character(!) and it's still not good enough.
Most probably I have unrealistic expectations because everything was going smoothly to this point. Do you guys have any advice how to deal with it? I don't want to hire anyone to do them as it's just a hobby project.

I am making a first person horror game and I am aiming at 1 hour long gameplay. It will be heavy on story so there is already the concern of giving up too much of it in the demo…
But the main worry is: is it worth releasing a demo that is 5-10 min long when the game’s final version will be 1 hour long?

So, I've been an indie dev since 2015, full-time in 2017, but I still struggle with this. How in the name of all that's holy do I find and reach my audience?!
So I'm aware of the fact that marketing is less about persuading people to play my game, and more about reaching people who will already find it cool.
Fine. But how do I do that? Reddit tends to dislike self-promotion. Facebook is trash. Twitter is dying, and its replacements (bsky and threads and these others that I can't keep track of) aren't big enough yet.
My game is a narrative game where choices matter. Mechanically it's half a re ..read more

Chances are that this post will fall into oblivion with a big community like this but in any case everyone will ever read this: with no background in coding, and no experience in building games I managed to build two small games and release them to the PlayStore. Even though I have "imposter style" feelings ("you're games are to small to be games" and "yeah but so many people manage to do this") I am still kinda proud I managed to do this.
And now; credit where it's due! I'd like to share a couple of free resources / software I used to make the games that I'd like to acknowledge. Disclaimer ..read more
