Sketch of the plant transport box used by Sir Robert Farquhar in 1824, precursor to the Wardian case. Credit: John Lindley, 'Instructions for Packing Living Plants in Foreign Countries, Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London 5 (1824)'. Source: Harvard Arboretum. Hello! I'm delving into the history of plant transport techniques and am in search of details on cases used by figures such as John Fothergill, Sir Robert Farquhar (depicted in the attached illustration), and William Bull. I'm particularly interested in learning more about their construction and dimensions from the 18 ..read more

What's the term for traits in the family?

I'm currently in hospital having some pretty strong meds which are making my brain feel like a sponge full of chowder and can't remember the word used for identifiers within a family. Like how Brassicaceae has 4 petals, 6 stamens. If anyone can share it I'd be grateful. I'm losing my damn mind over this as my parents want to start being able to identify local trees but I can't remember the word to use to tell them to look up the characteristics of the local tree families Much love ?? submitted by /u/Old-Computer2668 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

In the Olympic Peninsula area, oval-leaf, blueberries grow from sea level to high elevation. In the Puget sound area oval-leaf blueberries are rarely found in the lowlands, but appear commonly near the Cascade range. Red huckleberries( Vaccinium parafolium;similar species) are found in both places in low and high elevation. Does anybody know why Oval-leaf blueberries exhibit this unique distribution pattern? submitted by /u/DangerousBaby4198 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Recently Ive moved to a place that has the largest Ailanthus Ive ever seen in my area. Im constantly reminded of the thought of such a big tree pollinating others or spreading seeds if its a female and I REALLY just dont want it existing. Its a daunting thought that attempting to kill the tree only sends it into overdrive as well. That brought me to research and finding out that there is a species of Verticillium that is very effective at killing the roots of Ailanthus with very little effect on natives. That being said I was wondering if anyone has researched this same topic and has attempte ..read more

Conifer sample collection question

Hi, I'm just starting out on my botany journey and live in an area which is largely populated with conifers. I want to be able to examine these species in detail and as such want to take samples. The thing is I'm not able to find much information online about how to go about taking a sample to minimise potential damage to the tree. So I figured I'd ask y'all. How would I go about taking a sample from a conifer? Thanks submitted by /u/Old-Computer2668 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more
