Feeling demoralized as a biochemistry major

hey this might be a bit of a rambly post and idk if the moderation will allow this, but I just was curious if anyone felt similarly in the curious of their undergrad biochem degree. I'm currently in my second semester of biochemistry, and after completing my first semester, and getting a B, I really wanted to get an A in Biochemistry II, but no matter how hard I try, I generally keep failing. we recently had our second exam on glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and glycogen, and I feel like I studied day and night, and the end result was me doing worse compared to the first exam on cell signali ..read more

Is there a correlation of protein in urine and in serum (blood)?

Is there any correlation at all with plasma protein levels with urine protein levels? Or are these tests (one checking urine and other done on plasma after centrifuging blood) looking at completely different things? submitted by /u/countingstars007 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Hi guys, I didnt really know where else to go but right now Im kinda struggling. I am a freshman in biomedical science major with an honors and chem minor. I usually did pretty okay in school in highschool and I feel like right now Im not doing well. I have a 3.6 gpa from last semester but right now I have like 3 Bs so i know that is gonna go down. I know it isnt super bad, but i do want to do grad school and I feel like I keep letting myself down. Do you guys have any tips on how to keep going? I just feel really helpless right now and I just need advice on how to improve myself. I know that ..read more

Alternative name for the protein folding funnel diagram and waddington landscape model?

I heard someone in a talk show an illustration of a valley and the fate of some concept was determined by the ball interacting with the obstacles to rest in certain places - similar to the waddington landscape model of development or the protein folding funnel diagram. He called it a "[name] diagram" but I don't remember what the name was? Does anyone know if this type of model illustration has a specific name? submitted by /u/CFTArr [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I'm a biochem major who is looking to take PChem this fall and I have two options to choose from: 1) Elementary Physical Chemistry: A summary of physical chemistry, focusing on its application to biological systems such as macromolecule stability, ligand interactions, enzyme function, and membrane processes, covering topics like thermodynamics, kinetics, statistical mechanics, quantum mechanics, and spectroscopy. 2) Physical Chemistry: An introductory course on contemporary quantum chemistry and wave mechanics, exploring atomic and molecular structures, as well as spectroscopic techniques ..read more

So I was given Interferon-Gamma receptor as a project and I have to find a disease associated with it, I can find a lot of gene mutations but i need to get the PDB of these affected IFN-gammas and I simply cannot find one. By any chance do you guys know a ligand that binds and inhibits IFN-gamma that I can use separately so i can put it into Pymol (I am desperate I genuinely cant find anything) submitted by /u/Affectionate-Shoe-61 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Is adsorptive transcytosis size-limited?
Reddit - Biochemistry

I’m designing a fictional/speculative-evolution microorganism concept, but I’d like it to be as plausible and rooted in real concepts and behaviors as possible. One thing that caught my eye is adsorptive transcytosis as a way microbes move through environments in the body, by using charge interactions so they don't have to rely on very specific receptor protein interactions. My main question is: is adsorptive/charge-based transcytosis limited (more hypothetically speaking than examples-wise) to small things e.g. less than 1 micron? I only really find examples of it in the virus and macromolec ..read more
