If you follow us on Instagram or Facebook, you know by now that we love to showcase what our adoptees are doing – especially as many of them are reaching adulthood! One amazing example is Abigail Ward, whom Ken and Michelle Ward adopted through our China program in 2003 at 10 months old. She is currently finishing her senior year at the U.S. Naval Academy, and she is one of only 32 Americans selected to receive the Rhodes Scholarship for graduate study starting in 2024 at Oxford University. Ken says this scholarship is one of the many joys and triumphs he and Michelle have experienced since a ..read more

Helping Families Thrive in Ethiopia
America World Adoption

Although Ethiopia closed its doors to international adoption in 2018, the urgent need to protect children remains. Children still become orphans due to political unrest, disease, and extreme poverty. Therefore, we are committed to continuing our work in this beautiful country. Over ten years ago, we started the Ethiopia Family Empowerment Project in partnership with the local government in Addis Ababa. Our shared goal was to allow families in extreme poverty to keep their children in their homes rather than giving them up to live in the government orphanage. Just $45 a month provides one fami ..read more

Say “Yes” Afraid
America World Adoption

When we tell adoption stories, we have the luxury of showing how wonderfully everything worked out — after it has all worked out. But the decision to adopt can take a true leap of faith in the beginning. This was definitely the case for Cameron and Brooke Amigo, who adopted their son, Samuel, from India in 2019, even though they feared he might live only a few short years once he came home. Sammy had a heart condition called Holmes Heart, in which only half of his heart was able to function normally. It also impacted the function of his lungs. Several doctors advised the Amigos that Sammy mi ..read more

February is American Heart Month, so we’d like to share a heartwarming adoption story involving a child with a heart condition. Children available for international adoption may have special needs or medical needs, which can feel daunting to prospective parents. However, we have seen many successful adoptions of children with these challenges. If God is calling you to adopt, we feel certain he will carry you through the process, just as he did for David and Amy Horner, who adopted their daughter, Cara Mei, in 2018. Keep reading to be inspired! Called to Adopt God first put adoption on Amy Hor ..read more

By Lisa Adams-Reese, India Program Director Cradle projects have been started all over India to save the lives of abandoned babies. There are various heartbreaking reasons an infant is abandoned, from extreme poverty to cultural pressures. Specially designed cradles are placed in hospitals, medical colleges, adoption centers, and satellite hospital locations, permitting parents to safely place unplanned infants in a cradle and know their baby will receive protection and care. The cradles are equipped with an alarm system that alerts staff to the presence of a baby three minutes after he or sh ..read more

On Orphan Sunday in 2016, Mike and Audrey Todd felt God tugging their hearts. Their church, Good Shepherd Church in Benton Ridge, OH, had invited an adoptive mom to speak at the service about the orphan crisis worldwide, and the Todds wanted to do something about it. They had always loved children; they had five biological children, and Mike worked in a children’s ministry. So, they agreed to consider adopting. Then, one night, they both dreamed they were holding a Chinese baby girl. That confirmed they were supposed to adopt and told them they should adopt from China. A friend suggested Amer ..read more

Saying “yes” to God isn’t always easy. Joseph and Mary knew this fact all too well. While the Nativity may rest in our minds as a picturesque scene, the truth is that Jesus’ birth was challenging for his parents. Mary had to bear the stigma of being an unwed mother, and Joseph had to humble himself to accept this child that wasn’t his… becoming an adoptive dad! Then, they had to travel more than 90 miles with Mary on the verge of delivery and possibly experiencing labor pains along the way. No palace — or even room — awaited the birth of the infant King, and Mary found herself delive ..read more

A profile of America World friend and supporter Ife Ibitayo In 2013, Ife Ibitayo attended a Wednesday night service with his parents at Woodsedge Community Church in Houston, TX. A missionary was speaking, and he said that if every family in the United States adopted one child, the entire global adoption system would disappear overnight. Ife says, “Something about that statement made the problem tractable, something I could wrap my mind around, and after that night, I knew that I would like to adopt a child someday.” At the time, Ife was 16, single, and unprepared to adopt. So, he decided to ..read more
