I worked in a research lab internship one summer doing biotech research and I LOVED IT!! Even as only a lab assistant. I really enjoyed the work itself & the flexibility/independence. I even won an award for my work! Biology is so inspiring and saves lives.
Things like medical research, microbiology, and genetics really inspire me. I’m not exactly sure what specific career path I would take, but I have many interests, including ecological surveying, bioethics, biostatics/modeling, genetic counseling, genetics research, medical research … I really like it! I am fully aware most jobs would ..read more

Hello everyone. I have been working on an evolutionary algorithm that should mimic life based on game theory and graph theory for three years now. In this algorithm complex life emerges through autonomous agents. The nodes are all individuals with their own neural networks. They see their neighbors in the network, make decisions and compete for scarce resources by attacking or defending. They evolve with natural selection and are self organizing. They decide themselves with who they want to interact or not. The network shows which ones can interact with which other. Reproduction happens at a l ..read more

So I love biology, but I recently did some work experience where I did a PCR test and I just had this sudden realisation that I don’t really enjoy practical science: it kinda seemed too… small? It was just very delicate and fiddly, and I just couldn’t see myself working in that way or enjoying that for the rest of my life. But what I did love was using an ultrasound and doing a blood sugar test. I love working in a skilful and practical way, but more with things I can actually see and touch. I also love the theory and talking to and interacting with people. So I guess what I’m asking is, what ..read more

I am from Eastern Europe and I want to study biology at a university in my country. I would like to ask what kind of training you have for this qualification and in general your impressions of this science. Its pros and cons. How do you study it?

During my time reading ,,Who are we and how we got there" by geneticist David Reich he described the period in which human population developed a mutation in FOXP2 gene which enabled us better word expression and language proficiency, resulting in much better communication between us. It says that the potential reason why Neanderthals could not develop a civilization at the level of humans isn't necessarily because they were less intelligent but because they simply lacked an ability to express their thoughts/emotions to one another because they didn't posses this particular mutation of FOXP2 ..read more

So I understand how the Bombardier Beetle produces it's noxious hot fluid defense, I understand that it has a thick chamber to protect its internal organs from the heat, I understand that it pulses the fluid so as not to burn this organ, but what I can't seem to find an answer to is how it doesn't burn the rest of it's body when the fluid sprays everywhere. If you see footage of its spray it gets it all over its own legs and body as well as onto it's attacker, so how does the attacker whonis a few inches away get burned but the beetle can be hit by its own spray point-blank and be fine?

How can I do statistical analysis?
How can I do statistical analysis to see if the troughs are statistically different to the peaks and the plateau regions ?? Do I average the peaks and do a one way ANOVA then repeat for troughs ?

In this graph, the y axis denotes heart rate while x axis is time post-excerise. The points within the graph indicate control, 50% VO2max and 70% VO2max.
Based on this data, what heart rate would you predict for 60% VO2 max?
And it would be very helpful if y'all let me know how you got to the answer, thank you!
