I spend a lot of time looking through vintage illustrations. It all began with the butterflies drawn by entomologist Millot. I made coloring pages out of them for you, do you remember? Most recently, I was browsing Geometria and falling in awe with mathematical shapes from the 1500s (!) – shapes I cannot comprehend with my poor math education, but it does not take a math gal to comprehend beautiful art. I liked them so much, that I made a book cover with the Geometria shapes and put my multiplication chart into it. So there I was, lost in geometry when I found old skeletons. Oh, my! We printed ..read more

why memorize multiplication tables? Learning multiplication tables helps with quick math calculations. When we’re in a store and looking at something in a package, such as hamburger buns or eggs, we can quickly determine how many packages we need to feed a crowd. Sure, we could stand there and think “8, 16, 24…” or “12,24,36…” but we can more quickly think, “Okay, 50 people are coming, there are 8 buns in a bag, we’ll need 6 bags and will have 2 buns leftover.” Since multiplication tables were drilled into me, I can multiply and divide simple math calculations quickly. Is it the same with you ..read more

Balancing Homeschooling and Working From Home – a Realistic Approach

At times, well-intentioned advice suggests that dedicating an entire day to homeschooling leaves no room for a job during regular hours. This is not necessarily so. My husband and I owned a garden center for a few years while also homeschooling. After that, I had an online business while homeschooling. We did not “only work in the evenings or on the weekends.” At the garden center, we worked during the daylight hours, and online, I worked in pockets of time throughout the day and evening. Yes, You Can Work and Homeschool Simultaneously! Yes! Many of us do this! You can, too. Your school may lo ..read more

Learn Spelling from this 1916 Curriculum for Elementary and Middle School

When I’m researching through old books, I keep an eye out for educational guides, as education was often more rigorous in the ‘olden days.’ Don’t you agree? We would have never thought to teach much of the left column below. But the point then, as now, is that when we teach spelling, we need to remember to teach relevant and necessary words and not just what’s on a spelling list. THE LESSONS INCLUDE SPELLING WORDS, NEW CONCEPTS, AND SHORT POEMS The short poems are my favorite part of these spelling books. No, it’s the beautiful artwork. Then, the poems. Isn’t this a beautiful page from the 5t ..read more

We used Letter of the Week years ago with our homeschooled children, and I’m happy to say it’s still online, still free, and still relevant for homeschoolers today. The curriculum was created by a parent, homeschooling their own children. Preparatory Curriculum is a 26-week curriculum created especially for toddlers, around 2-4 years old.  Since little ones are busy and ..read more
