Insights into the influence of dietary changes on symptoms of autism are providing families with more hope than ever before. Autism has long been considered a “mysterious” brain disorder that begins/ends in the brain, and that affects observable social behavior. But autism is far more than a behavioral-only diagnosis; it is a whole-body disorder. With back-to-school upon us, making the most of our valuable time is critical, especially if you have a child on a special diet. While it can be easy to run through a drive thru or order takeout, kids with special dietary needs can’t always eat out successfully. And many families choose to eat at home so they can really control the foods their kids eat. Those lazy summer days are over. So whether you are out the door by 7:30 am and in the carpool line by 3:00 pm, or you are a homeschooling family with a different weekly schedule, making the most of your time is important so that you can fee ..read more

Are you looking for a dessert that is festive and delicious? Did you know, on average… Kids eat 66 grams of sugar per day, two and a half times what’s recommended. For a fun, festive and healthier alternative… Try Watermelon Cupcakes! They are a great treat that is much lower in sugar but still colorful and beautiful. So while they contain some natural sugar from the fruit, it’s much less than what’s found in a cupcake. And they also contain important nut ..read more

For me, summer is such a fun time to experiment with new recipes. Our days are less structured and my daughter loves to join me in the kitchen to create new, delicious foods and drinks. Since we don’t do traditional sodas or sports drinks, summertime is a perfect time for my bubbly, healthy Hibiscus and Rose Hips “Soda.” I call it a soda because it is fizzy but that’s because it is fermented. You will get the benefit of microbiome-supporting probiotics from this drink as well. It does need some time (2 – 4 days) so it is a great home “science project” that the whole family can watch as it f ..read more

Holidays are great opportunities to encourage our kids to join us in the kitchen to prepare festive foods and also take the lead on making their own recipes. I am so proud of my daughter, Ruby. She created a smoothie bowl for the Fourth of July! She figured out a plan of the ingredients she was going to need, determined amounts for each ingredient, wrote out the recipe, and with our supervision, used the blender to create this healthy, delicious, and festive treat for the 4th! She even made the video above and edited it herself. It can be customized to fit with various diets. You can change ..read more

Artificial colors can be the cause of many negative reactions when they are ingested into our bodies. Some children and adults become hyperactive, irritable, aggressive, inattentive, or have other symptoms known to stem from artificial colors made from petroleum-based additives. For Easter this year, consider naturally dyed Easter eggs. While you don’t actually eat the dye on Easter eggs (as you might with other dyed foods) since you’re only coloring the shell, there are still very important reasons to use natural dye. First, eggs often get a little cracked during the process of dying (espec ..read more
