Protein helps maintain good blood glucose levels and is a very important part of a good gestational diabetes diet, therefore many women look for products high in protein to add into the diet to increase the amount of protein being consumed.
Protein positively affects the growth of fetal tissue, including the brain. It also helps your breast and uterine tissue to grow during pregnancy, and it plays a role in your increasing blood supply.

Herb-buttered new potatoes. Delicious new potatoes coated in fresh chopped herbs and butter or oil to your liking.
New potatoes are a great starchy carb to add to your plate to ensure you’re still eating carbs, but pairing them more than eating plain potatoes on their own.
By eating the potatoes in their skins, we are eating more fibre, meaning they take longer to digest, which is beneficial to blood sugar levels, and by adding butter or oil to the potatoes, we are increasing the amount of fat, helping to pair the carbs and reducing the spike in blood glucose levels.

If you have coeliac disease or gluten intolerance, you may be wondering if you can follow a gluten-free gestational diabetes diet without added complications.
The great news is that following a gluten-free gestational diabetes diet is no more difficult than following a gestational diabetes diet that will help blood glucose levels, especially if you opt for natural sources of gluten-free foods.
Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley, rye, and other grains. These grains are predominantly found in high-carbohydrate foods such as bread, pasta, cereals, cakes and biscuits.

Silky smooth, creamy, buttery mashed potato. The perfect pairing for sausages, stews, casseroles and for topping pies.
Potatoes are high in carbohydrates, making them a vegetable that raises blood glucose levels rapidly. Mashed potatoes can be even harder to tolerate as the potatoes have been peeled, removing additional fibre from the flesh and cooked. Then, mashing them means they can be digested more easily than potatoes in their whole form, such as a new potato eaten in the skin.
In order to make mashed potatoes more tolerable and to reduce the impact on blood glucose levels, we can add ad ..read more

Every year I see ladies posting in my Facebook support group desperately craving Starbuck’s Pumpkin Spice Lattes, but these sweet Halloween drinks are packed with carbs (sugar), making them a risky choice for anyone with diabetes.
Here are the total carbs in a short (small) Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte:
Short skimmed or semi-skimmed milk, 27.6g – almost 7 tsp of sugar!
Short whole milk, 27.0g – 6 ¾ tsp of sugar
Short coconut milk, 24.8g – just over 6 tsp of sugar
Short soy milk, 24.3g – 6 tsp of sugar
Make your own GD friendly pumpkin spice latte instead, it is so easy!

Breakfast cereal AKA ‘GD kryptonite‘!
The majority of dietitians and hospital dietary info. suggest a suitable breakfast being breakfast cereal such as Weetabix, Bran flakes, All-Bran, Shreddies, Shredded Wheat, Granola, No added sugar Muesli, or porridge oats.
High fibre and low in fat, covered with a helping of lactose (milk) and sometimes they like to advise adding a helping of fructose (fruit) on top too…. so a high carb cereal covered in carbs and more carbs.
Carb overload!
We have learnt through experience that it is very rare for mothers to be able to tolerate these cereals throughout ..read more
