The Range 33”x30” Since I just returned from QuiltCon, where The Range hung, it reminded me that I should tell a little story about this quilt. When I travel to teach, I often end up with a lot of downtime in hotel rooms, so I decided to use that time wisely and come up with a portable project. I had been thinking about reject blocks from one of my commission quilts and how I could use them as a jumping off point for a new quilt. Reject (or inspiration) blocks. Each block is 2.5”, unfinished. I thought the blocks above were interesting, but too complicated. To simplify the block I used two f ..read more

Remember last fall, how I said I wasn’t making any quilts because I was too busy packing my house and moving? Well, that was only a partial truth. I was busy packing, but I was also writing a book! Stitched Mosaic Quilting, published by Landauer, will be out in August. It is a deep dive into my Stitched Mosaic process. The book includes step-by-step instructions, new projects, and a chapter on how I think about color.  I will share much more about the book process (which was sometimes fabulous, and sometimes painful!) as the publication date approaches, but I am so happy to finally ..read more

Friends, Every year I have a “Word of the Year”, which I make into a mini quilt. Last year’s word was Grace. Apparently I am carrying that into 2022, as I do not want to think of a new word. So I am allowing myself some grace to let this tradition slide this year. We moved houses on December 22. It wasn’t a big move, just across town, but after living in our old house for 18 years, we had plenty of junk to go through and many boxes to pack and unpack. We had not planned to move, but decided to buy my brother’s house after he took a job out of state. It is a great house - full of windows, a la ..read more

This spring I pulled out my raincoat and found in the pocket a train ticket dated 10/11/19. It’s the ticket I used to go into New York City to meet with Scott Fortunoff of Jaftex fabrics. I wasn’t exactly sure what the meeting was going to be about, but it turned out Jaftex was interested in collaborating on a fabric line. As a sign of life getting a bit back to normal, I’ll be teaching an in-person Stitched Mosaics workshop at Snow Farm over Labor Day weekend. This is a three-day workshop, with a very small class, and COVID safety protocols in place. For more information, please visit the S ..read more

Hi friends, A few weeks ago, I took a live virtual class with Valerie Goodwin through Craft Napa. Valerie literally wrote the book on Art Quilt Maps and I am fascinated by her process. It was a joy to spend a whole day learning new things.  For those of you who have taken my Map Making workshop, either in person or online, you may be interested in two websites that Valerie shared with us. Both are resources for copyright free source maps, allow downloads, and are fun to play with. Snazzy Maps Cadmapper Thank you to everyone who has signed up for my online, o ..read more

October 2019, when we could all still easily travel, I took the train into New York City to have lunch with Scott Fortunoff of Jaftex Fabrics. It turned out that Scott was interested in including me in the roster of designers for Studio e Fabrics. I didn't know what to expect, or how the process worked, but I signed on. There is now a new fabric line with my name on it coming out in April 2021! The Noble Menagerie line is based on my animal quilts and has several coordinating prints (including one map quilt). It was important to me that the fabrics are "cut-up-able", so that a scrap quilter ..read more

You know the saying, "she who dies with the most fabric wins"? Well, this summer I acquired an estate of fabric from someone who gave it a run for her money. The original owner of this stash would have definitely agreed that she gave it a good try. My late summer consisted of organizing, washing, folding, and bundling loads of fabric to see exactly what I had. There is so much good stuff (and let's be honest, some not-as-good stuff) but overall it's an impressive collection of quilt shop quality fabric. Because I will certainly not use all of this fabric before I die, I am hav ..read more

Thank you to everyone who went to my online studio sale last month. Everything went shockingly fast, and I was happy to send those little quilts onto new homes. I still have more stuff, so I'll do it again in a few months. As most of you know, circle designs are one of my very favorite motifs for quilts. I love how I can take rigid geometric lines and add a few circles to create an element of playfulness and whimsy. The blocks above are what I have been playing with recently. I don't know where this is going, if anywhere, but it has been fun to experiment. Working with these blocks, inspire ..read more
