5 Lessons from Ephesians on Caring for the Sick & Distressed
Logos Bible Software
by Scott Harrower

Caring for the sick and distressed is a God-given opportunity to show love and good works in God’s presence, by his power, and in collaboration with others. Mutual care was a vital way members of the earliest churches related to one another. Likewise, Paul includes care for others as a key theme throughout his writings. One such place is his letter to the Ephesians. A number of the themes Paul describes in Ephesians illuminate the reality of caring for others. Paul speaks about God’s love and good works, our call to share with those in need, and how God by his grace enables us to do so. These ..read more

How to Plan a Pastoral Hospital Visit
Logos Bible Software
by Mark Brians

Showing kindness to the sick from a distance—paying bills, meal trains—is surely not wrong, but what is interesting about the biblical command to visit the sick is the emphasis Scripture places on embodied presence. I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me. (Matt 25:35–36) Pastors, in particular, are to visit the sick: Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing h ..read more

Wyatt Graham (PhD, The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary) serves as the executive director of The Gospel Coalition Canada. You can follow him on X at @wagraham. 1. Summa Theologica, by Thomas Aquinas Thomas, as Peter Kreeft put it, is the master of common sense. I often find deep clarity in Thomas, although as a Protestant, I don’t always agree with him! It’s very readable ..read more

Ecclesiology: What Do We Believe about the Church?
Logos Bible Software
by Christopher Kou

The word “church” occurs only three times in the Gospel accounts, each time in Matthew. The most definitional of these uses comes from Peter’s confession of Jesus as the Son of God. Jesus replies to him, And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Matt 16:18 ESV; emphasis added). Of first importance, this passage teaches us that the Christian church is no ordinary institution of common interest, but that it is built by Jesus Christ himself. It is the only human institution that will endure into eternity, overcom ..read more

1 Thessalonians 4 & the Truth about the “Secret” Rapture

“He shall come again to judge the living and the dead.” —Apostles’ Creed “He shall come again, with glory, to judge the living and the dead; whose kingdom shall have no end.” —Nicene Creed These words have echoed down the halls of history for nearly two millennia. Somewhere near the end of that hall, a side door was opened and a confusing sound was added.1 That sound was the teaching of a secret “rapture” of the church from this world before the Second Coming. George Eldon Ladd expressed the novelty of this view in the history of the church in these words: The hope of the Church throughout t ..read more

What Is This Thing Called Bible Study?
Logos Bible Software
by Peter Krol

If you search your Bible for the phrase “Bible study,” you won’t find it.  A big part of the problem is that the word “Bible” never occurs in most English Bibles. Even if you search for just the word “study,” you won’t find quite what you’re looking for.  Some of the returnees from exile “study” the Law of Moses (Ezra 7:10; Neh 8:13). That’s a promising start. But people are also “studying” God’s works (Ps 111:2), “studying” various proverbs (Eccl 12:9), and “studying” Jewish traditions (John 7:15). And one of the most direct statements about study in Scripture is not encouraging ..read more

10 Grievances about Study Bibles (& Which Are Best)

In my last piece we looked at some qualities that make for a good study Bible. Now it’s time to look at some things that I’d love to see Bible publishers stop doing when putting together a study Bible. Though ’tis no longer the hallowed season of Festivus, nevertheless it’s time for an airing of my top ten Bible-nerd grievances! 10. Availability in only one translation I know that publishers can only publish study Bibles in translations that they license from the copyright holder (and I know that the ethics of copyrighting a Bible translation are an entirely different subject for a different ..read more

A Theology of AI by a Bible Software Nerd
Logos Bible Software
by Mark Ward

When I first began teaching others how to use Bible software in the early 2000s, I actually had a stock joke that Logos was building a sermon generator that would produce both exegesis and illustrations. It wasn’t a very funny joke then; now it’s not a joke at all. AI can do this. But what does the advent of AI mean for the sacred task of preaching the Word? If indeed preaching is “truth through personality,” as Philips Brooks famously said, what role should Large Language Models (LLMs) play in the production of sermons, or in Bible study more generally? Many Logos users have been asking us q ..read more
