The Dark Side of Solar Panels

I came across this article recently & while it’s primarily intended for those homeowners who’ve leased solar panels or are considering it, it also applies to anyone considering buying solar panels. You should be very concerned about who you’re leasing or buying from, as many of these companies go out of business & then get sold to bankers who are not set up to provide service. Bottom line is, buyer beware……. https://time.com/6317339/rooftop-solar-power-failure/ The post The Dark Side of Solar Panels appeared first on DeMotte Architects | Ridgefield, CT ..read more

Who’s Better at Evaluating an Architect – The Homeowner or Builder?

Who do you think is in a better position to evaluate how well an architect does his job… a homeowner or a builder? From my perspective, it’s a builder hands-down & I’ll tell you why. Most homeowners who hire an architect have not been through the process before. They don’t know what to expect, they don’t understand the process, they don’t understand what they’re getting, and they don’t really know if it’s any good or not once done (meaning the quality of design & construction drawings). I think that even once they’ve been through the process, they have a better idea and they appreciate ..read more

5 Most Common Mistakes Homeowners Make When Remodeling
DeMotte Architects | Ridgefield, CT
by Brad DeMotte

1: They don’t spend enough time in the house: Many homeowners don’t live in their house long enough to understand what works, what doesn’t, what they’d like to change & why. Ideally, you should live in a house for at least a year to experience all 4 seasons. Things like light, views, noise, traffic patterns & flow may not be apparent right away until you start living in the house. Some clients remodel shortly after buying without ever living in the house, which is a real roll of the dice. 2. They don’t hire an architect: While most remodeling projects require a building permit so archi ..read more

Good Design vs. Bad Design

Design is a very subjective subject, and as they say, “beauty is in the eye of the beholder.” When it comes to architecture (or anything, for that matter), what may appeal to one person may not appeal to another. Some buildings that appeal to most people might then be acknowledged as “good design,” while if that same building is berated by most, then it might be considered “bad design.” I often wonder if most homeowners really understand the difference between good design and bad design. We’re surrounded by a lot of both when it comes to houses… take a drive through your neighborhood and look ..read more

Quality vs. Quantity: Which Do You Prefer?

When it comes to construction, there seems to be 2 camps of people… those that prefer quality over quantity, & those that prefer the opposite. Personally, I’ll always choose quality over quantity when it comes to architecture & construction, because it’s all about the “quality of space” which is my primary concern. Consider this scenario for quantity vs. quality: For the same amount of money, you could build a 4000 SF house with “good” materials & finishes, or a smaller 2500 SF house with “better” or “best” materials & finishes. Which would you choose? People who build the bigg ..read more

We’ll have to see how they’re affected once the dust settles… Build to rent: This major trend started in 2019 & may very well be here to stay for a while.
