In four weeks I’ll be boarding a plane bound for London. I’ll visit a good friend when I arrive, pick up a bicycle from Pearson Cycles, get fit on the bike, go to sleep and start what I hope is the easy part of this story. There’s just something about a naked tree that makes me smile. It’s not that I love the winter so much as it is more difficult to ride but I do love the stillness that happens in winter. And the quite. I ride a lot on a little farm road near my home, Crawford Road. Its just a few miles long and the southern half is open to very little local traffic, mostly farm tractors. The northern half of the road is closed with gates on both ends saying “Road Closed”. So I just walk around them to continue riding. The 110th edition of the Tour de France departs Bilbao, Spain on Saturday, July 1, 2023. A very hilly course and three days in the Basque region of Spain before returning to French soil. Ending three weeks later with a traditional sprint finish in Paris on the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. I am crazy about riding gravel. Most of my cycling these days is on trails, paths, farm roads and super quite rural roads in and around where I live in northern Illinois. Out my door and in minutes I’m in dirt. In fact the trail system around here in Lake County, Illinois is just so fantastic there’s hardly a need to get on a busy road. I can do a hundred mile loop with less than ten miles of it on a road, and mostly just short connections or crossings. I love it. I was a roadie. One of the things I like most about the work I do is the never ending search for new ideas. I think beyond a pretty picture finding an idea is most rewarding for me and along with new ideas I’m also always looking at new ways to express those ideas. Drawing vs painting I’m a draw-er. I know it’s not a word but drawing is what I love most, do first and feel most natural with, I’m a draw-er. Verses a painter. While I do like painting its not natural to me.
