This question is sort of related to "what job do you work on", but I'm interest in more especific aspects For example, should I be able to program? Be an Excel expert? Study topics in statistics? Thanks in advance submitted by /u/Eld29 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

Who's the Gilbert Strang of your favorite math topic ?

Gilbert Strang is an artist in teaching (applied) linear algebra, his MIT 18.06 is brilliantly taught in a way that even someone who's into ''rigorous'' math would enjoy, after finishing the playlist I was kind of upset that there is no more to watch and I tried to look other MIT courses but nothing compares to it, so I wonder if there are other Gil Strangs to be aware of in other area of mathematics ? submitted by /u/al3arabcoreleone [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

"There's an infinite number of waves you can draw through a point which means there's an infinite number frequencies at that point, hence why the Fourier transform of a delta function is a constant" Is this statement true?

The point I'm hung up on is the logical jump from "since there's an infinite number of waves that pass through the point" to "then there's an infinite number of frequencies". How can we make the logical leap that this implies infinite frequencies if we can only differentiate all those waves if we look at a time interval LARGER than the infinitesimal window? Also If you restrict a complex wave with many frequencies over a given interval there's always going to be an infinite number of waves you can draw that line up with the original wave over the small interval, then do something else outside ..read more

I want to self learn fuzzy mathematics, or atleast the basics of it. What would be the best books for that? And what are the prerequisites? Currently in high school and I've done calc, coordinate geometry, Combinatorics, Algebra (Binomial, Sequence and series, Theory of equations etc etc) submitted by /u/West_Profit773 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

I am looking for book recommendations for something about stochastic differential equations. It's not covered in my curriculum but i read a bit about it and they seem pretty neat. Now i want to learn more about them. Last time i wanted to learn about something i bought a book without looking up if it's any good and the book read awfully, so i am informing myself before buying and potentially wasting a lot of money. submitted by /u/Excellent_Emu1688 [visit reddit] [comments ..read more

This recurring thread will be for questions that might not warrant their own thread. We would like to see more conceptual-based questions posted in this thread, rather than "what is the answer to this problem?". For example, here are some kinds of questions that we'd like to see in this thread: Can someone explain the concept of maпifolds to me? What are the applications of Represeпtation Theory? What's a good starter book for Numerical Aпalysis? What can I do to prepare for college/grad school/getting a job? Including a brief description of your mathematical background and the context for ..read more

When I started high school I hated math, I sucked at it and I got 60s every test. But I had a lot of knowledge about computers, and my teachers recommended I enroll in a program of high school students learning for a bachelors degree. The first math courses I took was linear algebra, and at first I really enjoyed it. I just loved how every concept introduced had a very abstract geometrical interpretation. But once it was time to solve problems and start cramming for the finals test I just hated it. I couldn't solve any question, and it felt like I was just memorizing solutions and patterns to ..read more
