Kona Bicycle Brand for Sale After Dropping Out of Sea Otter Bike Show

by Andrew McLemore

The original version of this story was published on BikeRumor. It’s likely a tough week for the employees of Kona Bicycles. After setting up a booth at Sea Otter, one of the cycling industry’s largest annual gatherings, Kona employees were told to tear it back down before the event even started. The move was surprising for a number of reasons. Kona had just unveiled a new adventure bike as the show opened. It’s also strange because the brand had already paid to get its booth to the venue and set it up. However, a day after the mysterious exit, Kona’s parent company, Kent Outdoo ..read more

by Rebecca Parsons

Is it just us, or does it feel like every time you go to the beach, you must run a mini-marathon, transferring all of your gear from the car to the sand? Getting your umbrellas, towels, beach toys, kids, snacks, drinks, and body boards down to the beach typically requires multiple trips, leaving you exhausted by the time you finally are ready to “relax.”  Adding a quality beach wagon to your routine can help you streamline your gear-hauling while reducing trips to the car and the exhaustion that ensues. They’re a game changer. Seriously. The best beach wagons fit easily in your vehicle ..read more

Andrea Larson stepped off the Northern Country Scenic Trail (NCST) on April 15, setting a new fastest known time (FKT) for an unsupported thru-hike of the Wisconsin NCST section. According to the Fastest Known Time website, she completed the 215-mile trail in 3 days, 3 hours, and 5 minutes. Larson ran and hiked almost nonstop, setting a pace of nearly 69 miles per day. “This is something I never imagined I’d do,” Larson told GearJunkie shortly after completing her FKT. This is the 38-year-old Wausau, Wisconsin, native’s second FKT in as many years. While new to setting thru-hike records, Lars ..read more

Super Red, Rarely Dead: Fenix HM75R Headlamp Review
GearJunkie
by Sean McCoy

If the Fenix HM75R stands out for any single reason, it would be its red light setting. Powerful enough to see objects clearly out to 52 feet and highly adjustable, this is the red light mode I’ve been craving. But calling out one single feature on the HM75R does it a disservice. While many good headlamps are on the market, few stand out from the crowd. The Fenix HM75R is a big, burly beast of a headlamp that will outshine most others and do so with a wonderful interface, plus some cool bonus features that make it one of a kind. The red light on the HM75R is vastly more powerful than most hea ..read more

The ability to harness fire is one of humanity’s most significant accomplishments. And while a nice hole or a ring of rocks can provide an adequate setup for gathering around flaming embers, the best fire pits are preferable for both style and safety. While the basic premise of every fire pit is the same, features vary from model to model to suit different needs and preferences, so we have thoroughly examined which ones are best equipped for various situations. The GearJunkie testers gathered seven of the best fire pits currently on the market and fired them up in various settings. To get an ..read more

The Best Running Headphones of 2024

Buying the best running headphones can be a dice roll. Virtually all of us use them, but these techy tidbits come in all over the board. Depending on what you’re doing, they can miss the mark. The best running headphones provide strong field performance like fit and durability. Condition-specific factors — touch functionality, water resistance, and connectivity — could make or break anyone’s hype on a run.   How can you be sure whether the headphones you’re thinking about will stay put if you take a spill, go parkour, or run during an earthquake? And if you’re going the distance on ..read more

Polar explorer Lonnie Dupre has spent the last four-and-a-half decades forging uncharted paths. In 2001, he and John Hoelscher completed the world’s first and only non-motorized circumnavigation of Greenland, covering 6,500 miles on dog sled and kayak. In 2022, Dupre returned to the country to film Amka, a documentary focused on his unique relationship with the Polar Inuit community that will appear on the U.S. film festival circuit in spring and summer of 2024. Throughout Dupre’s decades of polar adventures, he has put gear to the ultimate tests and taken stock of textile evolutions first-ha ..read more

Camp for Free on Public Land and Beyond: ‘Dispersed Camping’ 101
GearJunkie
by Will Brendza

A few years ago, I didn’t know what “dispersed camping” meant and had no idea there were places across the country where camping was utterly free. And I wasn’t alone. According to the 2024 report from The Dyrt, 39% of the U.S. population doesn’t know they can camp for free, and 40% know they can but have never tried it. Now, after more than a year on the road (and hundreds of nights spent camping across North America), I can say without a doubt that dispersed camping is my preference. It’s becoming even more important with the rising cost of campsites. The same report from The Dyrt found that ..read more
