I thought that when I had children, I would be able to maintain the job, the lifestyle and things would on balance would work out. I knew it was going to be tough at times but until you experience becoming a mother you never know your path so I didn’t ..read more

What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you (back in March last year)? Even back in March when there was still talk of ‘it’ being quick and we all had the energy for community-minded events, the world was a doorstep disco, I knew none of this would be helpful for me. I am diagnosed with schizophrenia, although that is now an outdated term the name never played a huge role for me as the symptoms were always the same, a rose by any other name as they say. Having lived with this since I was a teenager, now a woman firmly in her 40s I am acutely aware of triggers and warni ..read more

Name: Louella Children: Felix 7, Ridley 3, Otis 7 months Location: West Yorkshire What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you? My biggest concerns were around my children not having much socialisation. We had not long moved and my eldest Felix had just started a new school, he is on the spectrum and change and lack of routine affects him deeply. I had also literally just given birth when lockdown came in, and I had all sorts of plans to get myself out with my baby into the community and avoid a possible reoccurrence of post natal depression. What was the reality of th ..read more

Instagram.com/laura_robin_draws This is my son and me most mornings since March 2020. I carry him and my work laptop downstairs to start work at 7am. What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you (back in March last year)? “How on earth are we going to manage working and childcare at the same time?” What was the reality of the first lockdown for you? We were shielding in the first lockdown but the weather was great, so we spent a lot of time in the garden. We got used to being in the house/garden all the time, so it was really scary leaving the house when we got the green ..read more

Name: Meg Children’s ages: 5 & 9 Location: Altrincham What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you?My initial thoughts were disbelief about what was happening really. I am constantly on a mental see-saw and decided that the only way I would cope with lock down was to try not to think about why it was happening and by doing this I “pretended” it wouldn’t effect me too much (even though 100% percent of my PAID work stopped). I don’t think I actually had the mental capacity to think about it, and the people dying. I did watch a few daily press conference updates an ..read more

Name: Gemma Children’s ages: 5 & 8 Location: Sale What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you? FUCK!!!!! How am I going to work, look after the kids, keep them from killing each other, look after my mental health, stay fit, etc etc. This quickly turned to, ‘okay, what a great opportunity. I have always wondered about home schooling, this is going to be positive. Omg, I’m going to have so much free time without a commute’. What was the reality of those first few weeks of lockdown for you? Well, there was no free time! It was a real combination of ..read more

Name: Maura Children’s ages: (Grandchildren) 9 and 2 Location: Bolton What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you? I was dreading it although I assumed it would just be for 3 weeks. My grandchildren came to us in Nov 19 on a temporary care order, when the little one was 1, as he’d been badly assaulted by his Mums partner. So to keep them busy and active and distracted we were going to the cinema, soft play centres, zoo, swimming, days out, eating out and all sorts at weekends. We booked to go to Spain for Easter. This all had to stop. So we had our daily d ..read more

Name: Clare Children’s ages: 28, 12 and 10 Location: Stretford, Manchester What were your initial thoughts about how lockdown would affect you? I knew we would miss seeing friends, but thought we’d be ok for a few weeks and as we home educate our 12 yr old (and my younger one had just returned to school having only done Reception year) for 3 weeks before lockdown. So the schools closing wouldn’t affect our routine, childcare or work, I really didn’t think it would impact us that much aside from a bit of moaning about not having sleepovers.  What was the reality o ..read more
