POWDER Magazine
by Ian Greenwood

While the ski season may have just ended, Trollhaugen Ski Area, Wisconsin, is already thinking about next Fall.  Taking after European resorts that use a similar technique, the small ski area has spent the past several years covering and storing large piles of snow summer-long. When October arrives, Trollhaugen unwraps the snow and transports it to a suitable piste for use during its popular pre-season rail jam, Open Haugen. Riding the Rails With One of Skiing's Most Iconic Photographers Words and Photos by Mattias Fredriksson Following any local on their home mountain is usually fun, but following Leoni Zopp down the steps surrounding Andermatt is a fantastic experience. Not only does this 23-year-old ripper know every little corner of each groomer, every chute worth a name (or even the ones without a name!), and all the other off-piste runs, but she also skis them with power and style in a rare blend almost hard to describe. Leoni Zopp is a former ski racer who could have been a star in the Alpine World Cup. Sho ..read more

JHMR is replacing its 37-year-old predecessor due to its age. The original Sublette Lift ferries skiers uphill during a snowstorm. Towering over the looker's left side of the KT-22 lift—a Palisades Tahoe classic—stands McConkey's (previously known as Eagle's Nest—Palisades changed the name in honor of the late, great Shane McConkey), an imposing, near-vertical face that's functioned as a big mountain test piece for years and years. A skier descends McConkey's at Palisades Tahoe, California Courtesy Palisades Tahoe The zone's weighty reputation is well-deserved. Popularized by the likes of—you guessed it—Shane McConkey, McConkey's functions like a no-fall-zone-lite. Bailing doesn't guarantee a season-ending injury. However ..read more
