SelfEco Pots in the Fall
Wagners Greenhouse Blog

As we head into fall, it’s time to revisit the SelfEco pots that many of the plants sold at Wagners this past spring were growing in. These pots are made from plant starches found in corn, switch grass and sugar beets and are designed to break down naturally over an extended period of time. It’s not a matter of days or weeks but rather many months for these pots to totally breakdown. As the SelfEco pots break down over time, they also help provide nutrients for the plants. In the fall when you pull or dig out your plants, you’ll see that the pot is still there but rather than being hard like i ..read more

Water early in the morning or early evening. Avoid the heat of the day as the water evaporates quickly when it’s so hot. Plants that are wet overnight can lead to disease problems, especially in the veggie garden. Raise your lawn mower so the grass is at least 4” long AFTER mowing. Longer grass shades the ground keeping it cooler which means less watering. Don’t wait until plants are wilted before watering. Be preemptive with watering.  Keep in mind that during the heat of the day, even well-watered plants can wilt as they can’t take moisture up fast enough. Don’t fertilize wilted plants ..read more

Keeping Amaryllis from Year- to- year

With a bit of effort, it’s easy to have amaryllis that will bloom year-after-year.  Let’s start the steps needed to get them to rebloom once the flowers have faded. Remove the flower stalks just above the bulb and set the plant in a bright sunny window during the rest of the winter. Don’t over water as this can lead to the bulb rotting. It’s best to keep it slightly on the dry side. Once the weather has warmed up well past freezing in the spring which often is around Memorial Day, it’s time for the plants to be moved outdoors to their summer home. You have a couple options during the summ ..read more

These three basic tips will help keep your containers, hanging baskets and window boxes looking great during the heat of the summer and into the fall season. For the rest of this post when we say containers, we are referring not only to them but hanging baskets and window boxes as well. Keep well-watered While it sounds basic enough, it’s important to keep your containers well-watered and be proactive with your watering and not wait until they are wilted. Established lawns, shrubs and perennials should receive 1” of water per week delivered all at one time vs a little bit at a time. When mowing, your grass should be about 3” long after it’s mowed. Longer grass shades the ground keeping it cooler which in turn means less drying out of the soil. Longer grass also prevents weeds from emerging. Recently planted shrubs, perennials, evergreens and trees will need more frequent watering. Use a rain gauge to see how long it takes your sprinklers to deliver 1” of water. Each type of sprinkler delivers water at different rates. Water containers, hanging ..read more
