Why Have Non-Christian Friends

The conversation went something like this:  "Did you all hear what happened?" my friend said, referencing the news. "It's so heartbreaking. How can one human being do something so evil to another human being?”  "Our sin nature," I blurted out instinctively.    Blank stares. Yes, my response may have been a good Christian theological response, but it wasn’t a helpful one to my friends who don’t share my faith ..read more

Understanding Rest – More Than Just Relaxing
InterVarsity.org

Over Christmas break, I was lazy. I didn’t do anything except watch B-level Christmas movies with my parents, work out a little, and read. It was nice … until it wasn’t. I’d just gotten done with a really hectic month of hosting Christmas parties, coordinating schedules, and all the other things my job entails, and I thought a downshift into relaxation mode was exactly what I needed. But I got bored. Really fast ..read more

The Winter of Our Contentment

The campus I help staff canceled all classes and events this Tuesday due to what looked like a hefty nor’easter winter storm. When I woke up, it was raining, and then, as I wrote this at 4 p.m. that day, not a flake of snow could be seen of the expected 10ish inches we Bostonians had braced ourselves for ..read more

Dear Urbana 22 participants, Many of you may not know this, but my road to Urbana was marked by trauma. I remember the moment right before the first opening session of the conference. The worship team just finished their set and invited the crowd to be seated. My heart was pounding as I awaited the signal to step into the spotlight. Nervously, I glanced down at my meticulously drafted and redrafted script. Then I began to pray.   A supernatural peace washed over me. I sensed the Holy Spirit telling me, “Anna, you have done harder things than this.”  ..read more

Sitting and Listening: The Call To Being Interruptible
InterVarsity.org
by

I was learning how to be present. I was learning what it meant to be interruptible. I sat with her while she cried and said nothing. I was learning how to hold the hearts of 40+ young women. I was learning that we were all so broken and that in the realm of love, a little goes a long way. These were all things I learned and practiced as a freshman RA ..read more

Nazareth U. and Central Indiana: The Spiritual Discipline of Uncool Places

There is a place on Earth which is a smear of cornfields and grassland, a yellow-ish blur of land that ancient glaciers rolling-pinned into smoothness on their way from elsewhere to elsewhere. The wind races around those fields as if it could still catch the glaciers somehow, like a child chasing after an older sibling. It is flat enough, empty enough, that it almost feels friction-less. A place seemingly meant for gliding over and passing through. This place is central Indiana. I went to college there.  ..read more
