The median projected percentage change for total salary budgets from 2020 to 2021 is an increase of 3.0%, according to XpertHR’s 2021 Salary Budget Survey of 460 US employers. This increase matches the actual median percentage change for total salary budgets from 2019 to 2020. The results show that while COVID-19 has shaken the economy in 2020, employers – by and large – are planning to keep wage increases for 2021 level with those given out this year, rather than reducing pay raises. In fact, even when looking at the median percentage changes in salary budgets for individual employee groups ..read more

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) became the first-ever nationwide paid leave law when it took effect April 1, providing paid sick leave and paid family and medical leave for qualifying reasons related to the COVID-19 pandemic. But those benefits may not be around much longer. The FFCRA has a December 31 sunset provision and despite calls for its extension, an 11th-hour reprieve from Congress appears increasingly unlikely. So what will it mean for employers and employees if the FFCRA is allowed to expire amid recordbreaking cases of COVID-19? A recent XpertHR podcast explore ..read more

As 2020 draws to a close, employers and employees are striving to complete their goals and objectives during what has been a most difficult year, and reflecting on their accomplishments. A key part of that involves completing their 2020 performance reviews and planning new goals for the coming year. Although the practice of annual performance reviews have gone under the microscope, they are still the norm for the vast majority of companies. A study by Hollister Staffing found that 75% of all organizations do annual reviews; 91% believe it is crucial to employee engagement. Done well, performan ..read more

How the Biden Presidency Could Affect Employers
XpertHR US | HR Online Blog
by David Weisenfeld

The election of Joe Biden as the nation’s 46th president is certain to have an impact on employers, most notably in terms of agency enforcement. But the changes appear likely to be tempered by the likelihood of continued divided government. Biden’s best-case scenario is a 50-50 split in the Senate, pending the results of the two Senate seats in Georgia headed for runoff elections on January 5. And even if that were to happen (and it’s been two decades since Georgia elected a Democratic senator), Biden may still face legislative hurdles on issues such as the $15 minimum wage and other initiati ..read more

Done well, job postings influence better hiring outcomes. But job postings can also introduce bias into the hiring process, limiting the diversity of the hiring pool and exposing employers to potential litigation. By taking simple steps to critically analyze their job postings and making strategic changes to remove bias, employers can improve both the inclusivity of their organizations and their hiring outcomes. That was the message Katrina Kibben, CEO of Three Ears Media, a recruitment marketing copy agency, delivered during a presentation at the SHRM Inclusion 2020 conference. “Job postings ..read more

Disrupting Unconscious Bias at Work

Unconscious bias can be one of the biggest barriers to workplace equity. It can take many forms and, left unchecked, lead to a workforce that doesn’t look all that diverse. One successful example of removing unconscious bias involved orchestras’ efforts to diversity their ranks. While stating good intentions, orchestras overwhelmingly were hiring men years ago. But once they switched to blind auditions, the results changed. Researchers found that having musicians audition behind a screen for a panel that cannot see them made it 50% more likely that a woman would advance to be a finalist. Spea ..read more

In the aftermath of the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and others, many companies have responded with an increased focus on their diversity and inclusion efforts. Amid the statements from CEOs and other corporate leaders, employees from a variety of backgrounds have backed these initiatives as well. But many tougher questions involving microaggressions in the workplace remain uncomfortable and, in many cases, unresolved. At the Society of Human Resource Management’s (SHRM’s) 2020 conference this week, Michael Baran, the co-author of “Subtle Acts of Exclusion,” discussed this issue an ..read more
