After more than two decades without a home, Columbus’ L. Hoster Brewing Company has its own brewery and taproom once again. This week they’re celebrating the grand opening of their space at 653 N. James Rd. on the east side near the airport. The space was formerly home to Actual Brewing, which shuttered in 2019. Hoster Brewing is a long-time Columbus name, originally started by Louis Hoster in 1836 in the Brewery District, where some of his buildings remain. The brewery and its recipes have changed hands a number of times over the years, with the latest owner, Daniel Meyers, settling into thi ..read more

This week Connecticut-based Mecha Noodle Bar debuted its first Ohio location in the Short North at 965 N. High St., in the former White Castle space, and they kindly invited us to try it out! The space has been beautifully redone to incorporate a long bar and a comfortable, brightly lit dining room with natural wood accents. Throughout the space, wooden architectural details hang down from the ceiling. Mecha’s menu covers a range of bao buns, small plates, sushi, pho, and ramen. It’s all supplemented by bubble tea, cocktails, wine, sake, and beer. We tried a trio of drinks: the limeade, T ..read more

Today the owners of Toledo’s Maumee Bay Brewing Company open their first venture in central Ohio, Shawnee Station Taproom & Kitchen. The companion brewery offers a new name, modern space, and upgraded menu, all situated in a new build on Glick Road in Shawnee Hills, right across the O’Shaughnessy Dam from the Columbus Zoo. (At the other end of the strip is Boston Stoker’s newer coffee shop.) Maumee Bay’s original location in downtown Toledo makes its home in an historic brick building dating to the late 1800s. (You can see some of it in our post Two Days in Toledo.) By comparison, Shawne ..read more

On our recent New York City trip (where I made a late-night run to Katz’s Deli), we also hit up a breakfast spot that’s long been on my list: Russ & Daughters. Open for more than a century, Russ & Daughters is a New York City staple for bagels, lox, smoked fish, and many other Jewish specialties. The Russ & Daughters Cafe on Orchard Street on the Lower East Side is a companion to the Russ & Daughters deli a couple blocks away on Houston. The cafe is decked out in a delightfully old school style, with waiters in white jackets, parquet floors, cozy booths, walls lined with old ..read more

After losing its West Side location to a major fire last September, Shakers Public House had to close up shop temporarily. Its building on Georgesville Road was a complete loss, so owners Spencer and Caitlin Campbell, who revamped the place in 2021, were forced to find a new home. The easy-going pub kept going by finding a temporary spot to serve wings and other snacks for carryout only, but today it finally reopened in a big, new space on East Wilson Bridge Road in Worthington! They’ve spent months renovating the space, which was most recently J&D’s Place. The building, which is locate ..read more
