The source says grassroots members want the requirement limiting the candidacy for the top five party positions lifted. (FMT) – Bersatu’s defeat in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election last weekend has sparked discussions on a change in candidacy requirements for its top five positions, according to party sources. The Bersatu constitution states that only those who have been on the Supreme Council for at least two terms are allowed to contest the top five posts. But party insiders who spoke to FMT said the grassroots were challenging this rule, in a bid to ensure the party’s continuity ahead of ..read more

Government must do the hard work Murray Hunter Just over two months ago, prime minister Anwar Ibrahim claimed that efforts to eradicate poverty in Kuala Lumpur, Melaka and Negeri Sembilan have been 100 percent successful. Unicef just a few days ago releases a horrendous report claiming many families in Kuala Lumpur are still suffering the effects from the Covid-19 pandemic. The results of a longitudinal study among low-income households in Kuala Lumpur published online “Living on the Edge” found otherwise. The study of 755 households conducted between October 14 to November 16 ..read more

3 suggestion for Muhyiddin and Hadi to take PN to the next level
Malaysia Today

I would like to give PN 3 new ideas to think about, so that it might have something new to offer.  Nehru Sathiamoorthy Following PN’s defeat in KKB, many people, including Former law minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim, have been calling on Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin and Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang to step down.  In a Facebook post, Zaid said the defeat in KKB serves as a lesson for PN, which he said had ‘nothing to offer’. “Looking back, PH won big because PN had nothing to offer; absolutely nothing. The leaders are very old, not just in age but in ideas,” Zaid continued. In response to Za ..read more

Questions about PN’s ‘value proposition’ after by-election loss
Malaysia Today

“More importantly, it needs to do its job as the opposition instead of constantly raising the spectre of toppling the government” (MalaysiaNow) – While it remains the coalition of choice for the Malays, it can only achieve victory if it wins the support of the non-Malays as well. Questions have been raised on what value proposition Perikatan Nasional (PN) can bring to increase its support beyond its current vote bank following its defeat in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election last week. The opposition coalition, comprising PAS, Bersatu and Gerakan, currently controls more than 70 seats in Parli ..read more

PH’s KKB win a morale booster but meaningless, says analyst
Malaysia Today

University of Tasmania’s James Chin says it does not reflect the future of Malaysian politics as most Malay voters still favour PN and PAS. (FMT) – Pakatan Harapan’s success in defending the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat will boost the coalition’s morale but is largely meaningless, says a political analyst. James Chin of University of Tasmania said the race for the Selangor seat was a highly-localised election, and its results, which saw PH’s Pang Sock Tao winning by a 3,869-vote majority, did not reflect any significant change in Malaysia’s political environment. “It doesn’t show that there’s ..read more

Eventful week on Palestinian conflict in Malaysia points to West’s ‘second rehabilitation’ of Anwar?
Malaysia Today

The prime minister, often seen as more of a friend to the West than his former boss, appears to have dialled back on pro-Palestine speeches. (MalaysiaNow) – Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is facing pressure to “rehabilitate” himself from recent anti-Western remarks, an uncharacteristic turn from a time two decades ago when he was seen as being groomed by Western allies to take over from their erstwhile enemy Dr Mahathir Mohamad. This follows Washington’s attempt to bring Malaysia in line in imposing sanctions against enemies it labels as “terrorists” by sending two officials to Kuala Lumpur. Ma ..read more

Zaid Ibrahim is right. Muhyiddin and Hadi should go
Malaysia Today

We might have serious doubts as to whether Anwar will own up to any of the changes that he has promised us, but when it comes to Hadi and Muhyiddin, we are not even sure if they intend to bring any changes at all. Nehru Sathiamoorthy Zaid Ibrahim has called on Hadi and Muhyiddin to step down, after the result of the KKB by election came out. I think Zaid has got a point. KKB had around 50 percent Malays, 30 percent Chinese and 20 percent Indians. The Malays and the Indians were unhappy with PH. Only the Chinese stood by PH. With a potential of 70 percent of the voters on its side, PN sho ..read more

Politics will continue as usual now the KKB byelection is over
Malaysia Today

There is now more confidence that PH and UMNO together can pull-off the next general election. Its most likely, the ‘unity government’ will continue with business as usual without making any changes to what they are doing. Murray Hunter The awaited Selangor state byelection in the seat of Kuala Kubu Baharu was completed with the DAP candidate Pang Sock Tao retaining the seat for the party, after the death of 3 term member Lee Kee Hiong, who passed away last March. Pang received 14,000 votes to her main opponent Bersatu’s Khairul Azhari Sauf, who received 10,131 votes. This gave Pang a 3,869 v ..read more
