The Disingenuous Nature of Modern Nature Photography

There is a disturbing trend (at least, I find it disturbing) I have been witnessing over the last few years that seems to be spreading like a noxious weed, primarily across social media circles (AI image making has done absolutely nothing to help). A trend I have come to term ‘The Disingenuous Nature of Modern Nature photography’. There are photographers acting and behaving disingenuously with their imagery to outdo, outperform, and get more social media gratification (not to mention win competitions!) than the next person. Witnessing what occurred in the Sony WWPO Awards not too long ago, thi ..read more

Photograph of the Month March 2024 – Riding the Iceberg in Antarctica
Joshua Holko Photography
by Joshua Holko
3w ago
The photograph of the month for March 2024 comes from my recent December 2023 expedition to the Antarctic Peninsula (Read the Trip Report) and is of Adelie penguins riding an Iceberg. Photographed on our very last full day in Antarctica, this image was made by holding the camera with a wide angle 14-35mm lens over the side of the zodiac, just a few centimetres above the water line. The key to making this approach work is the focal point and the choice of f-stop to ensure sufficient depth of field. You really need to focus one-third into the frame and ensure you have stopped down enough to have ..read more

This is just one of the incredible bird species to be found on my Zululand Ground level ma ..read more

Departing for Iceland Winter Arctic Fox Expedition 2024
Joshua Holko Photography
by Joshua Holko
1M ago
Please note that I will be offline for the next eight days (from tomorrow) while guiding my annual expedition to the far north of Iceland to photograph Arctic Fox in Winter. The expedition to the Hornstraidir Nature Reserve to photograph Arctic Fox is near and dear to my heart, and this year, it looks like we will have some fantastic snow conditions. I am really excited to get back up to this remote part of Iceland to find and photograph this tenacious predator. The area we are located for this expedition is quite far from the nearest town, without cell or internet coverage. If you are trying ..read more
