Can’t make it to the museum on a weekday? We’re here for you! On April 6-7 we will host a Solar Eclipse Weekend. Guests to the museum will learn more about the sc ..read more

Bringing mesophotic corals from the deep to Frost Science
Frost Museum of Science

Did you know that there are coral reefs far below the ocean’s surface? While most corals are found in brightly lit shallow waters, where their resident photosynthetic algae (called zooxanthellae) can easily turn sunlight into food, corals can also live hundreds and even thousands of feet underwater! In fact, researchers have recently mapped the largest known deep-sea coral reef on the planet along the southeastern United States coast, covering an area nearly three times the size of Yellowstone National Park. The reef spans depths of about 650-3,300 feet (200-1,000 meters) deep, where corals an ..read more

This year’s edition of our Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program has been extra special because it is the first year of the new, NOAA-funded Your Shores initiative. Your Shores is a collaboration between UBMS, Frost Science’s Museum Volunteers for the Environment (MUVE), and the museum’s marine conservation team that gives underserved high school students the skills and experience to pursue careers in marine science. The first big milestone for the seven Your Shores students? Getting scuba certified! Scuba diving is a key skill for many marine scientists, yet it is expensive and time-co ..read more

Nothing ruins the experience of going to the beach more than setting out your towel and laying down to relax, only to look around and see that you are surrounded by bottle caps, cigarette butts and other trash. Much of that trash – collectively known as marine debris – eventually makes its way into the ocean, where unsuspecting animals mistake it for a tasty treat or get tangled up in it. The Frost Science Conservation team has been cleaning up marine debris on local beaches for almost a decade. Our Museum Volunteers for the Environment (MUVE) program hosts an annual event to mark September’s ..read more

Frost Science Paleontologist Discovers Two New Species of Dinosaurs
Frost Museum of Science
by Katie Riopelle

As the museum’s curator of vertebrate paleontology, making scientific discoveries about dinosaurs is a key part of my job. Recently I published some exciting ones: two new species of dinosaurs! I first began this research as part of my PhD work, and my findings are now available in the scientific journal, Papers in Palaeontology. These two new species belong to the dog-sized pachycephalosaur genus, Sphaerotholus (pronounced sfair-oh-thol-us). Pachycephalosaurs are commonly called the “dome-headed dinosaurs” because they had thickened, bowling ball-like domes of bone on the top of their heads ..read more
