Steam users have taken to the service to review bomb Tango Gameworks titles Hi-Fi Rush, The Evil Within, and The Evil Within 2 - but in a positive manner. Review bombs are usually made in anger over some reason or another, mainly as an attack on the game as a whole, its developer, or over being “woke” or not “woke” enough. The reasons are endless, really. But sometimes, folks band together and positively review bomb a game in support, as is currently the case with three Tango Gameworks titles. Read more ..read more

Is Call of Duty coming to Xbox Game Pass? Yes, no, maybe, who knows - but it’s clear no one believes what Xbox says any more

2024 will forever be known as the year of record games industry layoffs and studio closures, but I’d argue it will be just as remembered as the year Xbox lost the plot. Every other month, Microsoft’s gaming division has what ranges from avoidable PR scandal to full-on doom-and-gloom meltdown. We’re not even halfway through the year yet, and Xbox has already had to assuage fears it’s abandoning the console market entirely, and hand-wring about the apparent survival necessity behind its decision to publish some of its games on rival platforms. A couple of weeks prior, the company let go of 1,90 ..read more

Prelude Dark Pain may look like isometric Darkest Dungeon, but its influences run much, much deeper than that

Last weekend, I spent far less time than I'd have liked checking out cool indie games at Guadalindie 2024, a little but hard-hitting event in Malaga, Spain, which I wholeheartedly recommend if more editions are happening in the future. Coming out of this celebration of indie games and devs, Prelude Dark Pain was by far the coolest, most impressive title I could play. At first glance, Seville-based Quickfire Games' debut may look like a straightforward take on Darkest Dungeon and its sequel, and they're more than willing to admit that influence, yet the whole packs more ideas and sticks closer ..read more

From the publisher that popularised loot boxes comes... in-game ads - didn't we do all this in in the late 2000s?

EA CEO Andrew Wilson has stated in a company earnings call that considerations towards adding advertisements into future video games are very much alive within the company. However it's not a surefire thing - and he stresses that they have to be "very thoughtful" about it. Wilson says, "To answer your question on advertising broadly, again, I think it's still early on that front. And we have looked over the course of our history to be very thoughtful about advertising in the context of our play experiences. But again, as we think about the many, many billions of hours spent, both playing, cre ..read more

This week's news of Microsoft shutting down several studios - including Tango Gameworks and Arkane Austin - has left an especially sour taste in the mouth of pretty much everybody. It's the latest entry into the acquisition fallout saga - which seems to be one of the biggest hits in the video game industry right now. Activision Blizzard's post-acquisition cuts, Embracer group ruthlessly gutting studios it's bought. It begs the question - why would CEOs even want to sell their studios to one of these massive companies right now? To find out, we reached out to various CEOs and founding members ..read more

Street Fighter 6 is about to get some huge balance changes - here's some highlights from the upcoming patch

Street Fighter 6 entering its second year can mean only one thing - a meta-shattering balance patch. About damn time. May 22nd is a big day for Street Fighter 6, as it brings classic series icon Akuma to the game. Even so, Akuma won't be the biggest news on the day - because the Raging Demon is bringing along something even more terrifying and potentially demonic - the first major balance patch for the game. When I got to go hands-on with Akuma's SF6 variation, the build of SF6 I was playing also happened to be the build that featured the balance changes. While I was there, it only seemed rig ..read more

The most OP character in Street Fighter history is set to terrorize Street Fighter 6 - hands-on

Akuma is ALWAYS a problem. Whether it is because of his traditional moveset that contains everything a Street Fighter character needs to trouble the top of a tier list or his often ludicrous damage output, Akuma is a character who is going to cause problems whenever he appears in a game. Throughout the years, since his first appearance as a secret character in Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Akuma is almost always one of the best characters in any game he is a playable character in. Hell, he even ended up in Tekken 7 and was one of the best characters in that series, too. Akuma is inevitable ..read more
