One of my favorite childhood games was Secret of Mana. Gameplay-wise, it landed squarely between Final Fantasy IV and The Legend of Zelda, and was one of my first introductions to action RPGs. The lush world fascinated me, and my brother and I poured hours into exploring, leveling up, and seeking weapon orbs, all while Hiroki Kikuta’s iconic soundtrack played. The Mana series has had ups and downs over the years, but when it lands, it really lands. I’ve been hoping Visions of Mana would be a return to form ever since Square Enix announced it in December, especially based on 2020’s stellar Tria ..read more

Open Roads falls somewhere between slice-of-life and traditional drama as a teenage daughter and her mother do some soul searching and familial discovery over what feels like just a weekend. Perhaps the fault was mine, but my initial impression of Open Roads back when it was pitched to us years ago was that we’d be on an extended cross-country road trip following these two ladies. But what we got was a three-hour stint. That isn’t necessarily bad, as game length certainly doesn’t determine quality in its own right—some folks want that short drive—but going into Open Roads with the right expect ..read more

While the Playdate is chock-full of fun games (including Under the Castle, which I recently reviewed), one has loomed over them all since even before the handheld’s launch: Lucas Pope’s alien support group manager Mars After Midnight. It came as a surprise that the follow-up to Pope’s industry-defining hits Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn would only be available to the Playdate’s small audience, but this only amplified the anticipation within the handheld’s niche community. It was impossible to escape Reddit posts and the like inquiring about when this game shrou ..read more

This year at PAX East, I got to play Coridden, an upcoming action RPG from Swedish developer Aftnareld. The game focuses on co-op gameplay and a fun monster-shifting mechanic that lets you ride your friends (er, more on that later). Coridden recently wrapped its Kickstarter campaign, which raised 150% of its initial funding goal, and I can see why it caught the interest of hundreds of backers. Though if I kept that knowledge to myself, this would be a very short preview, wouldn’t it? Right then, let’s get into it.
Coridden‘s world of Heera is a post-apocalyptic one, but think less Fallout and ..read more

Capcom-associated developer Inti Creates has announced a new IP, Card-en-Ciel, coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. No release date is available at this time.
Thanks to Gematsu, we learned that the developer has, however, given players a “Project Kickoff Trailer” for the game (below). Inti Creates also took a playable demo to PAX East 2024 in Boston this past weekend.
On the surface, Card-en-Ciel looks to be heavily influenced by the Mega Man Battle Network series, with an almost identical battle-grid, card-based battle system an ..read more

While RPGs have no shortage of high-energy moments requiring intense strategizing, quick reflexes, or simply a box of tissues for the more emotional moments, it’s important to have downtime between those to balance everything out. This episode is about “safe spaces” in RPGs, and our panelists did not always choose the kinds of song we expected of one another. We enjoyed hearing the various ways each of us wanted to represent safe spaces through a variety of musical means, and we’d love to hear your favorite music in this vein as well!

Readers, brace yourselves for a veritable banquet of goodies on this edition of RPGs Coming This Week. If last week was all about blockbusters, this week’s all about the games from smaller studios and publishers. I know I say this often, but we really are living in a second golden age for RPGs. Consider this column our little way of recognizing and celebrating this time of abundance while it lasts.
