Buy Chris’s The Art of Japanese Carpentry Materials HERE! Hello Everyone, and Happy New Year! This is Ilana, with a special treat for you: a guest post from Gary Radice, long-time reader of this blog, and an excellent woodworker! Gary recently sent me a photo and description published in Fine Woodworking magazine of a table he made, in which he generously mentioned Chris as his inspiration for making the table. This seemed like a wonderful jumping off point for a guest post that would be of interest to many of you. He was kind enough to write a bit more about the table and share some more phot ..read more

Greetings! This is Ilana, Chris’s wife/widow. It’s been a long time since I have posted, because although I think about Chris every day, I haven’t had information that I thought would be relevant to most readers of the blog. If you are new here, welcome! See the bottom of this post for more info. Long-time friends and fans, welcome back and nice to see you here! A few blog updates: I just updated the visual theme of the blog so it’s easier to find the sidebar with the carpentry essays for sale. I send out carpentry essays myself, and sometimes payment notifications are delayed, so don’t worry ..read more

Dear Carpentry Way community (that means you!), First, congratulations on making it through a year of pandemic life! It’s been an incredibly difficult year in most parts of the world, and I’m glad you are here and reading this. Thank you so much for the continued, wonderful messages about Chris or to let me know you are thinking about Ryden and me, even though often we have never met and may have never even set foot in the same country. It’s truly inspiring to me to continue to discover Chris’s legacy, almost a year after he died. Part of that legacy is all of the amazing people. Also, if you ..read more

Julio Alonso Guest Post Part 2: Funahiro’s Forge and more!
The Carpentry Way

Hello Everyone! Ilana here. Below is part 2 of Julio Alonso’s guest post about his trip to Japan. Thank you for your patience! If any of you have ideas for future content or guest posts, please feel free to contact me through the blog or at my email: ilanamartha1 “at” gmail dot com (spelling it out to avoid spambots). I do plan to share Chris’s carpentry study group information from several years ago. I need to sift through it to see 1) if I understand it well enough and 2) if it’s useful without the commentary and support he offered when he ran the study group. If you were a member of the st ..read more

Julio Alonso Guest Post: Kezuroukai and a Visit to Funahiro’s Forge
The Carpentry Way
by Chris Hall
3y ago
Intro from Ilana: Hello! Here is the guest post I promised from Julio Alonso, a woodworker in Spain and longtime reader of The Carpentry Way blog. When I found out that he had visited Funahiro’s forge, I asked him if he would be willing to write a guest post, as I thought it would be of interest to many of you. I thought I was asking Julio to do me a favor, but he responded as if I had given him a gift. He is, as you will see, extremely gracious and enthusiastic. He is also one of the only carpenters in Spain using traditional Japanese methods, but he has made up for the lack of others with si ..read more

Blast From the Past (3) – 2009 Shrine Lantern Presentation
The Carpentry Way

OK, everyone, I think this is the last of the older videos I will have to post, but it’s a good one! Once again, it’s raw footage and was not filmed with a tripod, so the video quality itself is understandably inconsistent. However, I think it’s something that most readers of this blog will want to see. Background: The story of the shrine lantern If you are a long-time or particularly enthusiastic reader of this blog, you may remember that in 2009, Chris designed and build a lantern similar to those found along the paths of shrines in Japan. His 50 (!) part series on designing and building the ..read more

Dear Readers, Greetings – I hope you all had a good summer solstice weekend and Father’s Day weekend. I continue to deeply appreciate your wonderful comments and emails! As the title of this post says, this is a blast from the past… In the fall of 2004, Chris taught a Japanese carpentry workshop on Gabriola Island, British Columbia, his home for several years. I stayed with him for a few months on the beautiful property he was renting on the island, which included a private cove and a shop building. It didn’t really have normal living quarters, but that was OK as the rest of the place was spec ..read more

Hello dear readers, I want to start by thanking you again for all of the wonderful messages and support over these last couple of months. Hello Everyone, This is a VERY brief note to say that the RTM-3 Riken Milling Machine has arrived! I really want to do a post about its arrival and also make some (clearly completely clueless) comments about the machine itself that I hope you will all enjoy. However, the combination of parenting a small child whose preschool is closed, managing the remaining aspects of Chris’s business, dealing with the sad logistics that come after losing a spouse, starting this year’s garden adventure, and working from home almost full-time is going to delay things a few more days! In the meantime, here is C ..read more
