Recovery Through the Years: Jimmie’s Story Almost 10 years ago, we met Jimmie for the first time soon after he completed treatment in our Day by Day substance use disorder program. We’ve now had the pleasure of meeting with him twice since then; once in 2019 and again just last month. Read his story below in three parts. For over 20 years, Jimmie lived with a substance use disorder. We eventually lost his job because of it and realized at this low point in his life that it was time to make a change. We need your help. Every dollar you donate to Agate has deep impact in our community. The work we do can seem daunting and the stories of the people we serve are rarely linear. Full Circle Sobriety: Jimmy's Story Often, Agate is just one step in the lives and journeys of the individuals we help. He didn’t join the Day by Day Recovery Program, but the stability of having a safe place to call home and the resou ..read more

Cynthia quickly connected with our shelter manager over their shared love of horror movies. She enjoyed the conversations about favorite films and upcoming releases. This connection helped put her at ease and feel safe, but, Cynthia emphasizes, it was still an emergency shelter. No matter the care or respect or daily events and activities, it was still a hard and stressful situation. “I don’t think people ful ..read more

Do you know why we chose the name Agate? We’ve received some questions as to why we chose the name Agate (pronounced aye-get) for our organization and want to give you the details!  The group of individuals who worked together to choose our name was comprised of staff, A Day in the Life Community Educators and other clients with first-hand experience with housing insecurity or homelessness. It was important that our new name represented who we are, so we made sure those making the decision represent who we are.  All staff had an opportunity to submit name suggestions, and that’s wher ..read more
