Reinforcing Our Bubbles
The Hugh Hewitt Show
by John Schroeder

The two big stories of the last 36 hours – The Key Bridge and Ronna McDaniel – both emphasize how much we hide inside our bubbles.  But they are different bubbles and for different reasons. The bubble around the Key Bridge disaster has to do with time and technology.  It will take a long time for the investigation to be completed and all the facts known.  Once the search for survivors is complete and all the dead known, the public will lose interest.  The story, when it is told, will be deeply technological looking at the particular bridge design, what went wrong on the shi ..read more

Actions and Consequences

So, the big breaking news this morning is a cargo ship hitting the Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsing it almost totally.  The video is frightening, at least seven souls in the water and I thank God it happened at around 1 in the morning, imagining what would have happened during a time of heavier traffic.  The most concise coverage I have seen is Fox.  This is breaking news and happened in real time as I write, some six hours after the strike.  It has only been in the last 5-10 minutes that any information about what caused the ship to hit the bridge has hit the airwaves.&n ..read more

Things You Need To Read

Some stuff needs to be read, and it speaks so powerfully you don’t need much from me. Example one – A tweet from Bjorn Lomborg.  Turns out most “misinformation experts” are liberal.  Are we surprised?  No.  Conservatives believe people are smart enough to figure out how to sort information from misinformation all on their own. California has a new problem.  Turns out gangs are coming into LA from out of the country – on tourist visas – then committing a bunch of high-end burglaries, fencing the stuff, wiring the money home, getting back on an airplane and flying home b ..read more

The Artificial Assuaging of Induced Guilt

Everybody wants to “make a difference” these days.  I was sitting in a movie theater this weekend and am treated to a PSA about Women’s History Month all about women in media that are “using their platform to make a difference.”  I broke it down in my head – I was in an entertainment venue watching an entertaining video about people that make entertainment doing entertaining things to “make a difference.”  In that whole scenario absolutely nothing was happening to help the underprivileged, change a law, build a business (unless you count the 501(3)(c)’s that were created by thes ..read more

We Need More Than Wisdom
The Hugh Hewitt Show
by John Schroeder

My daily devotional on Wednesday, looked at the necessity of wisdom: This is happening even as humans know more and create new knowledge faster than ever. Moreover, that knowledge is readily available and broadly accessible. Knowledge alone, it seems, isn’t enough to solve the issues confronting us. Put another way, having smart people working on critical problems isn’t enough. As the American novelist Walker Percy wryly noted, “You can get all A’s and still flunk life.” What humanity needs, particularly at this moment, is wisdom. There is a lot of truth there, but I think more is needed. Th ..read more

Even The Liberals Are Getting It Now – Sorta

Ran into a fascinating story in Newsweek Thursday.  It opens with this, “California’s jobs market has been struggling, despite the U.S. economy booming,…”  My neck nearly broke at the double take there – only a liberal could describe this economy as “booming,” and yet the story is quite condemnatory of the California economy.  I saw a meme the other day that said, “The economy is booming, we added 350,000 jobs in February! — I know I have three of them and I still can’t pay the rent.”  That about sums up this “booming” economy.  Nonetheless, the story is all about how ..read more

Defining Innocence
The Hugh Hewitt Show

One of the great open questions in history is the innocence of the average German citizen regarding the atrocities of the Nazis.  We know that the Nazis kept their genocidal activities secret from the populace, but everyone knew that the Jews were being rounded up and placed in camps.  How innocent could they be?  As nations like Canada cease arms sales to Israel, apparently in support of suffering “innocents” in Gaza, Similar questions arise.  Just how innocent are those Gazans? I have been to some chilling places in my life.  I sat on Red Square while Moscow was stil ..read more

In case you have not been paying attention the last couple of decades have featured the revival of the muscle car – I should know, I have two of them.  During the post-war period, we discovered that people in this nation actually loved to buy cars and make them go faster.  This resulted in in the original “muscle cars” – standard car models with massive engines but stripped of most comfort amenities to make them affordable.  Then in the 60’s Detroit (then the only game in the nation) discovered they would sell better if they looked good, and the golden age of the muscle car was ..read more

The Great Malingering?

On Saturday we noted the fourth anniversary of “15 days to slow the spread.”  In that post I noted the limitations of expertise.  Glenn Reynolds is far harsher in his evaluation, feeling that those experts are liable for damages and should pay a price – particularly given the damage suffered by so many in so many ways.  But in Reynolds’ conclusion he raises what I consider the essential question on all this. Says Reynolds: The “expert” class blew it, sold out or gloried in putting people under its thumb. Next time — and there will be a next time — ignore those people. And if th ..read more

The Systematic Destruction of Hope
The Hugh Hewitt Show

Almost since the inception of the nation, the key to wealth has been property ownership.  Prior to the Industrial Revolution it was land for agriculture, but since it is home ownership – regardless the acquisition and paying off of real property is the foundation of financial security.  As economic cycles have waxed and waned said acquisition has been more or less difficult but has always required financial discipline and sacrifice.  But to exercise that discipline and make those sacrifices you had to have hope that things would get better later.  I am beginning to wonder i ..read more
