As I read all these #OwnVoices books, I noticed that many revolved around the importance of family and food. In fact, they are intertwined together. Family recipes are passed down over generations. Grandmother cooking if not grandmother actually cooking. And it’s always love that binds the generations as well as the secret sauce for why the food is so delicioso. I was inspired to create this list after reading the Track series by Jason Reynolds followed by Lila Quintero Weaver’s excellent middle grade book, My Year in the Middle. I assumed that I would find a lot of books for this list. Instead, I was surprised by the dearth of #OwnVoices Track and Field children’s books given the dominance of people of color in this sport. My daughter and her friends have been working on this documentary/mockumentary for more than three years. The Nads are RISD’s ice hockey team. Her roommate, Caleb, is a member. Also, her good friend Gary is a key member of the team. I also know the mascot, Scrotie, who stayed with us for Thanksgiving last year.
