An 1895 Fake Morgan and More!!
Coin Thrill

So I finally wrapped up evaluating that collection I mentioned in the last post, and wow – what a doozy! The collection itself was fine (approx. 10 hours spent which is normal for this amount of coins), but it was the last pile of “weird coins” I saved to research at the end that threw me for a loop… It all started with this 1895 Morgan Dollar pictured above. I put it to the side because the date looked awfully strange to me, and indeed when I took the time to compare it to others I noticed just how TINY it actually was! Look at that thing – it’s wildly off! That was red flag #1 that it was a ..read more

The “Z” Collection

As promised, here’s that collection I was working on! I call it the “Z” Collection here, but in my documentation I actually have the client’s name swapped in the quotations which I like cuz it makes it feel more *personal*. And, of course, that’s how all the professionals in the space do it ;) You’ll always see the prominent collections labeled by their provenance which only adds to the coolness and history of each coin! Nothing too rare or valuable in this lot (about $485 retail / $320 liquidated), but still never gets old looking at 100+ year old coins… Which you can see below, along with a ..read more

The Ugliest/Prettiest Coin Holder You’ll Ever See?
Coin Thrill
by Jay

I’m looking over a collection for a friend, and saw this double sided coin holder in it! It’s the ugliest – but also the prettiest! – coin holder I have yet to see! Lol… Check it out: [For perspective] [Side view] [The back?] It looks like it should be able to be opened on *BOTH* ends, but sadly that is not the case. It only opens on one, however, if you pop that blue sponge out you can slip a coin in the other end and then pop the sponge back in and place your front coin in there next and voila – a double sided coin holder! I burst out laughing when my friend said I can keep it, but now I ..read more

Prop Money Is Flooding Our Town!

Good morning! It’s been a couple of years since our last post here, but I couldn’t help myself to log back in and share this current trend going down in our community… Fake $100 bills are showing up at locations and no one knows where they’re coming from! I first saw a copy at our local coin club when a member picked them up at a local antiques shop, and as he passed it around half of us (including myself) couldn’t tell what was wrong with them at first glance. It wasn’t until we got some hints that the markings become glaringly obvious, which is no wonder people are getting scammed all aroun ..read more

Show & Tell: Spanish Shipwreck Coin from 1755

Good morning! An old friend recently shared this with me and thought it was too cool not to forward along :) One of the first coins I ever picked up myself was from an old shipwreck and they’re excellent gateways into collecting! I don’t think my friend here is a collector, but the appreciation she has for this particular coin is super interesting. Here’s the note she passed along with the pics – thanks Desiree! ******* This is a coin found from a Spanish shipwreck from 1755. I wear it around my neck to remind me of things I love. The wreck is off the coast of where I’m from, Vero Beach, FL. F ..read more

Good morning, coin friends! A reader of my personal newsletter shot me a pic of his collection and I thought you’d enjoy seeing it :) Asked him if he could share a little background on it, and his response is shared below the pic. Check out that Covid-19 stamp on that 5 0z. silver bar! Can’t say I’ve seen that before! ****** [click image to make bigger] ****** From Chase: I’ve been into coins for as long as I can remember, at least at a surface level. Family would bring me back coins from the countries they visited when I was kid, and many of those coins now sit in my binder focusing on havin ..read more

What’s This Coin Worth?
Coin Thrill
by Jay

“What’s this coin worth?” The most popular question in collecting :) And one which I’m asked almost weekly by friends, family and countrymen! Rather than continuing to keep the juicy answers buried in emails and chat exchanges though, I thought we’d create a new series here where we post up the coins (or currency) in question, and then share the answers along side it. And by answers, I really mean “my opinion” since we all have slightly different answers depending on who you ask ;) I’d like to think that my 10 years of experience though, and liquidating over a dozen collections so far, is wor ..read more

Hey guys! Got a fun little story emailed to me recently and made me think of y’all :) I know I’ve been M.I.A. for a while, but let’s see if we can re-start this blog again and continue the thrill of collecting! I’ve still been at it behind the scenes here, and even started a new service helping people inventory and liquidate inherited coin collections (if you ever need any help, just shout!), but with life and biz/kids/covid/etc etc the poor blog’s kinda fallen by the wayside here… But now we’re back! And let’s kick off the celebration with a fun story of yore when silver was still circulatin ..read more

The Best Stapler for Coin Collecting!

If anyone is looking for a better stapler for their 2×2 coin flips, might I suggest this one by MAX USA Corp.? Max Flat-Clinch Stapler (Full Size) I got the gray model pictured above (HD-50DF), but it also comes in black too (HD-50DFBK) and I cannot tell you HOW BEAUTIFULLY IT WORKS!! I searched so many sites and recommendations to finally find the perfect one for coin collecting, and it was finally this review here by Wizard Coin Supply that sold me on trying it: “Absolutely the best manual stapler available for stapling coin flips (and just about anything else). We bought one of these to t ..read more
