My Passive Income and Goals (February 2024)
Lazy Man And Money

I have published a passive income monthly update for more than seven years. For a decade, I’ve published regular life goals that I don’t update that often. This year, I’m going to merge the two reports. I hope it will ensure that I am accountable for my goals at least once a month. It should be much better than looking at them once a quarter and thinking, “F^$^#, I didn’t do any of these.” Now, I can say that twelve times a year! ? All joking aside, putting goals in a spreadsheet and regularly updating it is very powerful. I’m incredibly proud of what I accomplished at the end of every year. B ..read more

Bad Advice for Kids
Lazy Man And Money

[The following is a guest article by frequent writer, Kosmo.] My son is learning about investing and personal finance in school (8th grade).  While the overall content is solid, I’ve occasionally had some concerns. Stock picking There is a contest among the students to see who does the best job of picking stocks — actually, there are two contests – one for individuals and one for teams.  My main concern is that there’s too much focus on the return and not as much on volatility. At the end of the fairly short period, winners are determined.  These will almost certainly be people ..read more

How Do You Feel About Cashback Sites?
Lazy Man And Money

Almost ten years ago, I wrote this article asking if people used cashback sites. I was around 38; our kids were just 1 and 2 years old. Our net worth was about a quarter of what it is now. Back then, I was a little unsure about chasing pennies. You’d think that might even be more true today, right? Maybe not. I’ll be keeping much of the article the same but adding in some new thoughts. I’ve been on the fence on cashback sites for a long time. I read many trusted friends and bloggers who rave about them. However, because I purchase almost everything on Amazon, I don’t think they’d work out that ..read more

I Tossed Dozens Personal Finance Books. These are Nine I Kept.

This year, Lazy Man and Money turns 18 years old. I may be ready to send it off to college and fend for itself. Over that time, I’ve had hundreds, maybe thousands, of publicists reach out to send me their clients’ books. For several years, I graciously accepted them. Who doesn’t love free stuff? Eventually, I realized the true cost was my time to read the book and write a review. I changed my policy to clarify that they are welcome to send me a book, but I can’t guarantee that I’ll read it or write a review. Since it only cost them a few dollars to send a book, most had no problem with that. I ..read more

Are You Biggering?

Are You Biggering? Last week my kids asked, “Can we watch the best thing Taylor Swift has ever done?” This was a strange question. My boys, ages 10 and 11, aren’t Taylor Swift fans. I enjoy her music, but I’ll take Jack Johnson’s Meet the Moonlight be over Midnights. Intrigued, I said, “Suuuuuuurre…. Let’s do it.” They went to our TV and started the 2012 cartoon movie The Lorax. Taylor Swift does the voice acting as a supporting actor. Danny Devito sings more than she does. In fact, she doesn’t sing a single note. Interestingly, at the time she said it was a quite a challenge. Imagine being th ..read more

Wow, February snuck up on me quickly. Of course, March will sneak up even faster, but not as fast as it does most years. I’ve been spending a lot of the month preparing goals and New Year’s Resolutions. I usually get those published in late January. However, this year, I’m trying to combine them with my monthly passive income update. Look for it next week when I have the numbers. More and more, I think the key to accomplishing your goals is to create good habits. When you make something healthy a routine, it just happens. For example, I grew up in a frugal home, and it helped me through some t ..read more

Back to the Office – or Not?

The following is a guest post from occasional contributor, Kosmo. I hope to be back with another article later this week. A while ago, I wrote about the new normal for office workers.  As we start 2024, many companies have rolled out return-to-office plans that require employees to return to the office either part-time or full-time.  What advantages does an employee see with in-office and WFH options? In-office advantages Communication It can be easier to communicate in person than online.  Non-verbal communication doesn’t come across quite as clearly via video conference.  ..read more

Tactical Tilt Your Asset Allocation?
Lazy Man And Money

I was reading an article in a financial magazine dealing with advanced topics. I like to think that I cover complex topics like QLACs, but I usually scratch the surface. I’m fine with that. I don’t have any professional training. If you are going to use complicated financial tools, it is probably best that you have a professional advisor and maybe a tax expert. However, the particular article I was reading wasn’t that complex. The idea was you might want to consider a tactical tilt of your asset allocation. I had never heard of the phrase “tactical tilt,” but I’ve been doing it for some time ..read more

Let’s do something a little different today. Over the last couple of days, I have spotted a couple of money articles that I think are interesting and worth sharing. If you like this kind of curated recommendation, let me know, and perhaps I’ll do it a little more often. Surprise! People are Happy About their Money Situation There’s a lot of gloom and doom in the news nowadays. If you ask many Americans about the economy, they’ll say that it isn’t doing so well. In fact, that’s one of the big reasons for President Biden’s low approval ratings. Personally, I have mixed feelings. The stock market ..read more

Passive Income Update: December 2023
Lazy Man And Money
by Lazy Man

We started the month like every December. We celebrate my wife’s birthday and we watch Santa come in on a boat to light the town Christmas tree. We had a great lunch with my brother and my niece and nephew. That may sound ordinary, but our lives are in different directions. Before too long they will be off to college. My youngest son (9 years old) competed in his first Lego Robotics competition. We had a new coach this year and I’m sure they wished they were more competitive. I guarantee you that no team had nearly as much fun as they did though. He also rode his first horse. His friend does h ..read more
