Editor’s Note: The following article is Part III of a response to Christianity Today’s April 2024 cover story on gender and appears in the Spring 2024 issue of Eikon. Parts I and II can be read here and here. One of the glorious and beautiful truths of—and legacies of—biblical Christianity is Christianity’s effect in history of ameliorating the various sufferings seen in the world. as Tom Holland has recounted in his one-volume church history, Dominion, Holland was somewhat surprised at how Christianity changed the world into which it arrived. Christianity led to the amelioration of much of th ..read more

Are Husbands and Wives Addressed in 1 Timothy 2:9–15?

Editor’s Note: The following article is Part II of a response to Christianity Today’s April 2024 cover story on gender and appears in the Spring 2024 issue of Eikon. Parts I and III can be read here and here. Gordon Hugenberger rightly reminds us in his essay in Christianity Today of the many areas where complementarians and egalitarians agree. In addition, we have all benefited from his excellent scholarship over the years. Still, I would dissent from his claim that 1 Tim. 2:9–15 speaks of the relationship between husbands and wives instead of men and women generally. If we accept Hugenberge ..read more

Do Egalitarians Need Safe Spaces?

The April 2024 issue of Christianity Today includes three cover stories addressing ongoing differences between complementarians and egalitarians. Titled “Division of Labor,” the cover asks whether egalitarians and complementarians are really as opposed to one another as people suppose. Inside the magazine, the editors introduce the three authors—Gordan Hugenberger, Dani Treweek, and Gaby Viesca—as “ministry leaders” who “offer better ways forward for all schools of thought on women’s roles in the church and the home” (3). In an editorial, executive editor Joy Allmond says that their coverage o ..read more

In this episode, Colin and Denny exposit Affirmation 6.1 of the Danvers Statement, which reads: Redemption in Christ aims at removing the distortions introduced by the curse. In the family, husbands should forsake harsh or selfish leadership and grow in love and care for their wives; wives should forsake resistance to their husbands’ authority and grow in willing, joyful submission to their husbands’ leadership (Eph 5:21-33; Col 3:18-19; Tit 2:3-5; 1 Pet 3:1-7). This affirmation calls Christian husbands and wives to grow in grace and sanctification, putting off the fleshly distortions resultin ..read more

Editor’s Note: The Following essay will appear in the Spring 2024 issue of Eikon. A former colleague of mine recently pointed out on X that pornography use repulses godly women and is a huge impediment to marriageability. He was, of course, right about that. But he went on to blame this moral failure among men for the low marriage rate in general, and claimed that he knows “ZERO single women genuinely uninterested in a virtuous, courageous, thoughtful man.” Expanding the discussion beyond the church, he concluded that “the American man’s inability to find a wife is a function of him not living ..read more
