Local SEO Guide

UPDATED 5/29/24:I went through all of the data last night and found that 99% of this data is for map nerds. There is very little here to give us any clues about Local SEO. That doesn’t mean there’s nothing here. More like the limitations of using ChatGPT to summarize these docs. For example, https://hexdocs.pm/google_api_content_warehouse/0.4.0/GoogleApi.ContentWarehouse.V1.Model.GeostoreFeatureProto.html has a lot more info than shown in our summary. So check out the links in the GSheet below to dive deeper. Here are the few things I found interesting from our data: Prominence “The relative p ..read more

Using Local Pack Grid Rankings for Competitive Local SEO Analysis
Local SEO Guide
by Andrew Shotland

Local grid rankings reports have been a great local SEO tool for a while. They can give you a sense of how a business ranks across various areas of a city, county, etc. Here’s an example of BrightLocal’s grid rank report: We found these reports so useful, we built our own uglier version in Looker Studio so we could customize the data. One of the first things we did was set up competitor grid rankings. The idea was to see how competitors ranked in Local Packs throughout a business’ service area so we could find new opportunities. Here’s our homely version of a grid rank for a veterinarian in O ..read more

The N.A.P. Hunter Chrome Extension is Back!
Local SEO Guide

Hey Local SEOs! In 2014, LSG released N.A.P. Hunter, a free Chrome Extension that enabled you do to run several standard local business NAP (Name, Address, & Phone Number) queries at once, then export the Google results into a CSV. At its peak, N.A.P. Hunter had more than 4,000 regular users. It broke a few years ago and we finally got around to updating it. Here’s how we described it when it launched: If you’re like us, you probably think citation work is the worst. All that manual work to clean up local business data at publishers that can’t keep their own databases accurate is hardly a ..read more

What’s With The New Site?
Local SEO Guide
by Andrew Shotland

Check Out Our New Site! You may have noticed this big honking new LSGSEO logo in the middle of the homepage. I thought it might merit an explanation. A few years ago, some of the team felt strongly that calling ourselves “Local” SEO Guide made it seem like all we did was Local SEO and was confusing and put people off. The truth was that about 50% of our clients have always come from non-“Local” clients – eCommerce, Media, B2B SaaS, etc. The team also hated the logo. They felt it was “old fashioned” and “dorky”. That made me smile, because that was exactly the intent. When we designed it like ..read more

Twitter Or Die!
Local SEO Guide

Elon Musk strikes me as something of a prankster, so I am sure he would approve of someone creating a Chrome bookmark that overwrites the new X.com logo with the old Twitter bird logo. So we made one. Here’s how it works: Create a new bookmark in Chrome. Call it “Twitter Or Die” (or whatever turns you on). Save it in your Bookmarks Bar. Edit the bookmark by pasting the code below into the URL field and save. The next time you go to Twitter.com, click the Twitter Or Die bookmark and it will replace the X logo with the blue Twitter bird logo in the header and the favicon. javascript:(functi ..read more

Soundtrack I had a conversation with my mum a while ago about the new DALL-E ‘thing’ that came out. My mum’s an artist and a writer– not a technophobe or a luddite by any means, but not a developer either. I’m not sure if I imagined the concern in her voice or not, but the tone of the conversation was bleak. The images generated by DALL-E were vivid, and beautiful, and seemed like art. Well, maybe that’s not fair. Maybe not ‘seemed.’ This blog post is an overview and summary of several different AI topics. I’m writing specifically for audiences unfamiliar with or comfortable with AI, coding ..read more
