'The case was hopeless...': Lawyer saves restaurant owner from a rapacious landlord's iron-clad contract

Landlords are just about one of the only things that could make us root for lawyers. The lesser of two evils really comes into play when those two parties are in the same room together. The powerful preying on the weak is one of the oldest tropes in storytelling. What's not to love about a story like this? A wily lawyer who wants to do the right thing—but still doesn't work for free—coming to the aid of a desperate owner of a local restaurant (that happens to be the lawyer's favorite.) The cartoonish antagonist coming in the form of a jowl-quivering rapacious landlord certainly does its part ..read more

'I saw red, but then I had an idea': Woman engineer punishes her coworkers by agreeing to "get coffee" for them

If you do something badly enough, you might not get asked to do it again. In the workplace, you've got to do this strategically. You want to mess up some basic chores in order to get out of them, but you also don't want to be viewed as being bad at your job.  This is common in many workplaces. Even though we all do dishes every day, in the office, everyone conveniently "forgets" how to load the dishwasher. Other people will pretend they can't figure out how to work the printer, and someone else will just have to load in new paper or ink. If you don't have enough interns, someone is going ..read more

When you know, you know. This is, of course, what everyone says when they find the partner with whom they may want to share the rest of their lives. However, this sentiment very much applies to couples who are on the verge of falling apart. As a third party, you can often see the signs that two people are not meant to be. Sure, there are the obvious signs: fighting, infidelity, etc, but when it comes to the subtle red flags, that's when side remarks, body language, and social media posting become relevant. These folks shared the red flags they have spotted via the following r/AskReddit thread ..read more

'I feel bad for your neighbor': New tenant shares neighbors' note online, internet blasts them for being inconsiderate

This person's just moved in, and their neighbors are already irritated with them… That's never a good sign!  When you first move into a new building, chances are you'll meet your neighbors at some point. And even if you don't meet them, you'll definitely hear them. In many apartments, the walls are thin enough to allow in sounds and smells. So you might not know your neighbor by name, but you know that he and his kids eat a roast for dinner, since you can smell it cooking and hear the dishes clinking.  Ideally, none of us would have to hear our neighbors, but we can't all live in ma ..read more

'Try to scam me? [...] I'll scam you back': Guy gets even with petty scammer after being sold broken furniture

It's always a risk when you're buying something from Marketplace. Like anything you purchase, you have to do your due diligence and assess the product carefully before going for it and making the purchase. Sometimes, we're overwhelmed and we forget to be careful when we buy products that appear to be perfectly fine. This Redditor certainly acknowledges his own part in that when he bought a broken ottoman. That being said, when he tried to return said item, it became clear that the previous owner was well aware that it was falling apart. Furthermore, she made it increasingly difficult for the ..read more

Being lazy on the job is something every single worker has experienced. No matter how good of a worker you are, or even how much you love your job, everyone has downtime in which they simply need to be a little lazy. There are actual studies that show that out of the 8 hours a day that people work, the average amount of time workers actually get work done is 3 hours. This means that 5 hours of those 8 are for workers to simply idle by, scroll on their phones, or stare into the abyss. Hopefully, this information will help you feel a little bit better about your level of productivity, or maybe ..read more

'One day, I had a belligerent customer come in': Teenage cashier gets back at impolite retail customer
FAIL Blog

Some people have never considered that they can go for a shopping trip without bothering the employees. It's never crossed their mind that they could go grocery shopping without telling a teenage employee that the fruit "was better last week." This is the person who whines to a clothing store employee that the "fabric seems cheap". Some customers get a thrill out of whining about unimportant, and sometimes unsolvable, first-world problems.  Other customers take aim not at the store's products, but at the employees. They think they're better than the poor teenagers working summer jobs, an ..read more

In retail, the number of customers who are convinced they know better than you is endless… Better than you when it comes to the products, better than you in terms of your store's policies, and better than you when it comes to the legalities under which you're trading. Having access to all the information with little understanding has emboldened people into thinking that they're experts after a few Google searches, even on impressively technical subjects. Of course, the rehearsed script often runs short after even the most minimal challenging, leaving these know-it-alls with a shaky leg to sta ..read more

There's a fine line between culinary genius and unhinged food disasters. For those who are enthused over fine dining, the combination of fig, goat cheese, and a balsamic reduction is a delight, but when uncivilized chefs steal the spotlight, they tweak one little ingredient and set the kitchen alight. Suddenly our fig, goat cheese, and peppermint reduction seems more disgusting than it is appetizing.  Now, I know I'm no chef, but I can recognize a delicious-looking meal when I see one–and these are NOT it. Unfortunately for the dinner tables below, eaters were astounded by the horrors th ..read more

HOA intervenes in fight over limited parking space, enforces new rule to get back at frustrating resident: 'Now [he] has to park his car far from his front door for at least 1 year'

Here is one of those rare instances in which an HOA was on the right side of an issue.  You know that you're a major problem if everyone else in the neighborhood agrees with how your HOA dealt with you. This neighborhood had two desired parking spaces, one of which everyone unanimously agreed belonged to an elderly neighbor. The other space was hogged by an annoying resident, who would go out of his way to ensure that no one ever snagged his spot. Well, his stubborn nature got him absolutely nowhere, except perhaps in hot water with the presiding HOA. They ended up creating an entirely n ..read more
