Charles Oliveira proved he had championship mettle when he battled through some early adversity against Michael Chandler. Oliveira faced Chandler for the vacant lightweight title in the main event of UFC 262 in May 2021. It took “Do Bronx” 28 octagon appearances to earn his first-career title shot. Round 1 was action packed. Oliveira dropped Chandler with a leg kick early. Chandler charged forward with a combination, prompting Oliveira to shoot for a takedown. Chandler then latched onto a guillotine, but Oliveira popped out and transitioned to his back. Chandler tried to slam his way out of i ..read more

For Javier Mendez, Islam Makhachev is more skilled than Khabib Nurmagomedov but not more dangerous. Daniel Cormier, who also trained under Mendez at American Kickboxing Academy, said UFC lightweight champion Makhachev is even more dangerous than former champ Nurmagomedov was during his prime. Mendez heavily disagrees. “OK, he’s more skilled in multiple areas, yes,” Mendez told MMA Mania. “More dangerous? Nobody is more dangerous, in my opinion, in the world than Khabib. Nobody, no one, I don’t care. I haven’t seen one that is more dangerous than Khabib in the sense of danger. I mean, you can ..read more

Cory Sandhagen envisions UFC bantamweight champion Sean O'Malley stopping Merab Dvalishvili. O’Malley (18-1 MMA, 10-1 UFC) announced that he’d like to fight Dvalishvili (17-4 MMA, 10-2 UFC) next to prove to everyone that he isn’t ducking the streaking contender. Dvalishvili is a relentless grappler. He attempted a UFC record 49 takedowns in his win over Petr Yan and managed to take down Olympic gold medalist wrestler Henry Cejudo five times in a come-from-behind win at UFC 298. But with O’Malley’s precision and knockout power, Sandhagen wouldn’t be surprised if the champion was able to take ou ..read more

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Vicente Luque accepted what many fighters would’ve rejected in his position – a replacement fight with a dangerous, lesser-ranked opponent on a lesser spot on the card. The UFC welterweight veteran was supposed to headline UFC on ESPN 54 against Sean Brady, who’s ranked No. 8 on the UFC’s official rankings. Instead, he ended up pitted against unranked striking powerhouse Joaquin Buckley in the co-main event of Saturday’s event. This change came as a consequence of Brady’s injury, which didn’t allow him to compete on the card. In response, Luque (22-9-1 MMA, 15-5 UFC) acce ..read more

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – A curveball was thrown Nate Landwehr’s way ahead of his return to the octagon, and he was more than OK with it. The fan-favorite UFC featherweight was scheduled to make his return against Pat Sabatini at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 54. However, about three weeks out from the event, Sabatini withdrew from the matchup and was replaced with Jamall Emmers (20-7 MMA, 4-3 UFC). It’s a drastic change in challenges, but one that Landwehr (17-5 MMA, 3-3 UFC) welcomes. “I feel like it’s better for the fans,” Landwehr said at the UFC on ESPN 54 media day on Wednesday. “I feel like the Pa ..read more

Dana White and Joe Rogan are both rambunctious, bald white men with an affinity for the UFC, but that doesn’t make them the same person, Sage Steele! Steele, a former ESPN anchor, welcomed White to “The Sage Steele Show” and spent more than an hour talking with the UFC CEO – touching on most of the same ol’ you’d expect from a Dana White podcast appearance – before arriving at her big final question and giving us an all-time interview gaffe. As if to set up a dramatic moment, Steele adjusted how she was sitting on a sofa, leaned in to look White in his eyes, and asked him this in a soft-spoken ..read more

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. – Erin Blanchfield thinks she’ll have an ironclad case for a women’s flyweight title shot with a win over Manon Fiorot in Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 54 headliner. Blanchfield (12-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC) has put together a solid undefeated streak to begin her octagon tenure, which has led her to a main event for the first time against Fiorot (11-1 MMA, 6-0 UFC), who brings a perfect promotional record of her own into the fight at Boardwalk Hall (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN+). In many circumstances, both women likely would’ve received title opportunities already with their respective resumes. Alex ..read more
