Bridging from the Fediverse to Bluesky (or not)
Uncharted Worlds

Comments on Ryan Barrett’s plan to create a “bridge” between the Fediverse and Bluesky, with reference to defaults, consent & moderation. Kind of a geeky post coming up!  I was going to put it as a comment on the article here, as it’s in response to that – but then I got an error message when I tried to post the comment, so I thought it might as well go here instead. The concept of a “bridge” is that people on Bluesky would be able to read posts on the Fediverse, and vice-versa – a bit like if you could go on your Facebook account and read other people’s Twitter posts. There are data ..read more

New Year 2024
Uncharted Worlds

A mix of things and thoughts, for the coming year. Happy new year, everyone. Overall I don’t feel optimistic about where the human race is headed.  So it doesn’t feel like a year that’s going to be happy. But I don’t want to put a 100% negative thing out into the world, so I’ve listed some cool stuff too!  Let’s do “sources of dread” first, and then go on to that :-) Looming concerns The NHS is in a precarious state.  There are staff shortages, ambulance waiting times are bad, and anyone who has to go to hospital is quite likely to catch covid there if they didn’t already have i ..read more

Moderation at scale
Uncharted Worlds

On moderation of social media:  principles, workloads, scale. I was thinking about the overall dynamics of instance-level federation on the Fediverse. The admins of each instance can choose to stay connected to each other instance as a whole, or can choose to block or limit it. Blocking instances, blocking individuals Threads, the Twitter-alikey software from Facebook, has just taken the first small test steps towards connecting with the wider Fediverse.  In that context, it would effectively be a kind of giant Fediverse instance. It was in one of the conversations about Threads that ..read more

Cake-mixing metaphor for learning
Uncharted Worlds
by Jennifer

Yesterday at a Systemic Modelling course I was on, we were coming up with metaphors for the learning we were doing.  Mine was the stage of making a cake where you mix the flour in! If you add the flour all in one go, the mix tends to go lumpy. Instead, you sprinkle in a little bit of flour, and then you mix that until it’s smooth again. The mix is my ability to do the current lot of things.  The flour is the new thing to try out.  Not too much all at once! Copyright © Jennifer Moore 2023. All rights reserved. Systemic Modelling learning curves

What I’ve been learning about recently – and some info about short free online events for anyone else who’s interested. Way way back in 1997, I went to a taster event for Clean Language: how to ask questions which, as far as possible, don’t push your own baggage onto the other person, either accidentally or on purpose. From that very first day, I thought the whole idea of it was really cool! Over the years, I dipped into a few more courses to learn more, about how & when to deploy this stuff & what it’s useful for. But it’s one of those things that typically only gets ta ..read more

BiCon structures, followup

More on support for teams trying to run a BiCon event, and the role of BiCon Continuity in that. A lot more discussion has happened since my last post here, both at BiCon itself and online since. I understand better now (I think) why the 2023 team’s proposal suggested such a central role for Continuity, and so much more work for Trustees. One big factor is that this team didn’t experience much support from or connection with the wider BiCon community, and so the Continuity Trustees felt like “the only people reliably around from year to year” (my paraphrase). This team also had a particul ..read more

History of the BiCon Guidelines

A comment written by me in discussions in 2021.  Still relevant, so I thought it would be useful to have it documented in public here. Context BiCon is an annual social/educational gathering, for bi people in the UK and “anyone with a positive interest in bisexuality”. There are BiCon Guidelines which describe what it’s meant to be like. BiCon Continuity is a legal entity which, these days, looks after BiCon’s money.  As I mention in the comment, this didn’t exist back in the 1990s. Another thing I refer to in this comment is the “DMP”.  That was the “Decision-Making Plenary ..read more

Why I’m trying out the Fediverse as an alternative to Twitter
Uncharted Worlds

Reflections on Twitter past and present, and where to find me on the Fediverse. (This is what some people refer to as “Mastodon”, but Mastodon is just one bit of software – like referring to “doing the hoovering” even if your vacuum cleaner didn’t come from Hoover.) It’s around 10 years or so since I started hanging out on Twitter. I think I probably heard of it first via Steve Lawson. I definitely remember that Steve was enthusing about it at the time – and at first I wasn’t interested. I tend to write long exploratory things, not little snappy comments, so it didn’t seem like a mat ..read more

Aspects of learning, in or out of school
Uncharted Worlds

Thinking about how school education compares with non‑school education (a.k.a. “home ed”). Recently, I was in a discussion about how non‑school education compares with school.  And I realised that part of what I was doing was a kind of disentangling:  “being out of school doesn’t necessarily mean XYZ“. Often when people hear a mention of non‑school education, a picture of it will straight away pop into their mind. For example, children doing a workbook sat at a table in their house, or young people doing random stuff and never taking any exams, or a poor lonely child who h ..read more
