Armpit hair was overwhelmingly the norm for workers and performers before 1920, so not surprisingly it shows up in this historic peak a boo film, filmed in Paris in 1901 or 1902. Shaved armpits actually only came into style in the US in the 1920s. This woman was likely used to stage costuming and hair and these kinds of hairpieces were common at this time. For years, many of us believed Carole Lombard’s last photo session took place New Year’s Eve, 1941, under the direction of photographer Robert Coburn for To Be or Not to Be. It turns Coburn was involved in Carole’s final session, but it occurred in 1942, and To Be or Not to Be had nothing to do with it.
