‘Sometimes enough is enough,’ says Matteo Trentin, but rarely does anything change The same week Philippe Gilbert donned a golden helmet to bid farewell to a glittering career, Matteo Trentin stood in a nondescript car park readying himself for yet another race as his season wound to an end. The pair often find themselves the lone duo representing the peloton on issues of safety and fighting for the collective rights and standards of the riders. As Gilbert bids farewell, Trentin (seven years his junior) now stands as one of the lone, senior voices of the bunch who’s willing to stick his neck ..read more

Wahoo X just got interesting: smart trainer and virtual world for $29/month In case you haven’t noticed, Wahoo is making a push to get your training attention. Barely a month goes by without an update to its Systm training apps or a new product release from the brand behind the range of Kickr trainers and Elemnt head units. It’s all part of Wahoo’s drive to offer a complete training ecosystem. Still, it’s hardly coincidental it comes at the same time Wahoo is facing new competition in the hardware market and is venturing into the virtual-world and software space itself. For all of Wahoo’s suc ..read more

Review: Rapha Pro Team Powerweave bib shorts The Powerweave Pro Team bib shorts are Rapha’s elite-level bib shorts boasting “Powerweave technology” and premium styling with an ultra-premium price tag to match. But can they live up to this billing? I spent this summer riding in Rapha’s top-end bibs to find out and found contrasting results. Here are my thoughts. The Powerweave bibs are not exactly new, having been first launched back in 2020. The bibs are said to be the result of an 18-month development program with EF-EasyPost riders following Rapha’s return to the WorldTour peloton in 2019 ..read more

Stop me from buying a 45-year-old Volvo

Stop me from buying a 45-year-old Volvo Arcore, Italy in 1948. The nation is on the brink of post-WWII civil war. Pietro Molteni is the undisputed salumi king, his slightly greasy reach extending across Europe and beyond. His packaging is a shade of burnt orange, white background, a little graphic of his majestic factory on the front, back when factory food was the future, something to be proud of. His goal: from the northern fringes of Milan to global domination. His path to success, on a continent gripped by post-war cycling heroics of Coppi and Magni and Bartali: a cycling team.  We k ..read more

Cool Tool Tuesday #12: Hands on with 12 new tools New tools day. It’s just like new bike day but more accessible and easier to fit into a drawer. This gallery is an assortment of interesting new tools that have hit the market in recent days/weeks/months, many of which are just begging to be featured in Cool Tool Tuesday. I’ve been fortunate enough to get hands-on experience with all of these and figured it was time to do a little show-and-tell presentation to the class. Unfortunately, I got a little carried away and overshot the time (word) limit, so I’ll be back with act two next week. This ..read more

The Cav team question rumbles on: B&B Hotels' press conference is off Mark Cavendish to B&B Hotels-KTM looked a certainty at the end of last week. A press conference was planned for this week in Paris, on Wednesday, October 26. The British sprinter had apparently been spotted trying on the 2023 B&B kit alongside his “new” teammates. Everything was in order. As recently as Friday, the French team indicated that the press conference was still going ahead. In preparation, the world’s English-language cycling media made plans to make their B&B Hotels press conference debuts. On Mo ..read more

Jayco Herald Sun Tour cancelled for the third year running The Jayco Herald Sun Tour, Australia’s oldest stage race, has been cancelled for a third-straight year. The 2023 edition of the race through regional Victoria won’t be run “due to ongoing logistical, planning, timing, and workforce challenges.” In a statement to CyclingTips, race organisers explained that they had “been working diligently behind the scenes in a bid to make the event possible next year” but that, after much consideration, “there are now genuine health and work safety issues for riders and staff” that ultimately forced ..read more

Fulcrum Racing 5 DB road wheelset review: free from fuss   When it comes to buying budget-friendly alloy wheels for a road bike, the lower-to-mid-tier options in Fulcrum’s Racing range have long been a go-to recommendation. Fulcrum’s entry-level options often combine solid build quality, easy-to-service hubs, and a non-offensive price.  For 2022 Fulcrum overhauled its range of entry-level alloy wheels suited to disc brake road bikes. The new Racing 4, 5, and 6 DB received tubeless-ready compatibility, wider internal rim widths, and revised hubs. This review focuses on the middle of ..read more

Bernal wants to make a Tour de France comeback, but he might not like what he finds Nine months ago, the chance of Egan Bernal even walking again was put at just 5% by one expert following his life-threatening training crash. But after almost seven months and a number of surgical procedures to fix a horrifying list of injuries, the 2019 Tour de France champion was back in the peloton. He lined up for just 12 race days in August and September, but with his last operation now out of the way, Bernal can finally put the events of January 24th behind him and look ahead. “They did the last surgery ..read more
