Want to impress your friends? Fond of learning new tips and tricks? Looking for things you can copy and paste into the "Terminal" app on your Mac to reveal the insights of the universe? If so, the website oneliners.sh is something you'll want to bookmark! Described as "one line BASH commands that you can't remember anyways," it's a collection of single line commands that you might find useful in different scenarios. Only a few of them are even peripherally email related, but that's okay! Email campaign designers might find the image conversion bits useful (and the compression/archive bits, t ..read more

Were you worried about using the word free in your subject line? What about in ALL CAPS?! What about extra exclamation points!!! Are you offering an opportunity to make money fast? With low money down and guaranteed dividends? How are you going to talk about these in your email message, since they’re spam words that you need to avoid? Except…they’re not! While good content matters, it matters more from a strategy and engagement perspective. What messaging is less likely to look like spam to subscribers, what wording is most likely to catch eyeballs (and clicks) from subscribers. Mailbox pr ..read more

DMARC growth, by the numbers
Spam Resource

As I've done for a while now, I continue to track DMARC adoption month-by-month by caching DNS data (including DMARC records) for the "top ten million domains" data set. It may not be a perfect view of the universe, but it's a fun little slice of it that helps to reinforce some of the assumptions I have: That DMARC is indeed growing, that Yahoo and Google did manage to introduce the word DMARC to a bunch of new people in 2024, but also, that a bunch of those folks just blindly implemented "p=none" as a policy with no actual care for protecting their domain. (Two steps forward, one step back ..read more

Reminder: Re-register DKIM domains with Yahoo Feedback Loops
Spam Resource

Yahoo's Clea Moore just posted to the "Postmaster @ Yahoo & AOL" blog reminding folks that anyone wanting to receive spam complaints via their Complaint Feedback Loop (CFL) mechanism, their version of an ISP Feedback Loop (FBL), must be registered via their new Sender Hub-based CFL signup mechanism. Yahoo's deadline: September 20th. Past that point, any legacy feedback loop feeds will stop working, and complaints will flow only back to senders and platforms that have registered via the updated portal. If you've registered this year, you should be good. This is all about people, companies ..read more

Who remembers X-AOL email formatted email?
Spam Resource

Once upon a time, the email marketing platform I worked on had three body content parts in the editor: the text version, the HTML version, and ... the AOL version! Because, once upon a time, sending HTML email to AOL users wasn't possible. This was a lonnnnng time ago, back when I worked for a company called Digital River. AOL email supported rich formatting, but only with a limited number of HTML tags. This annoyed many. Amazingly, L-Soft (makers of LISTSERV), still have documentation online showing what tags were supported. Big: <big> Body: <body> Bold: <b> Break: <br ..read more

I admit that I am not sure what Google Trends is/was. So I asked Wikipedia, which told me that "Google Trends is a website by Google that analyzes the popularity of top search queries in Google Search across various regions and languages. The website uses graphs to compare the search volume of different queries over time." And according to Search Engine Land, the email subscription functionality will cease on October 29, 2024. Zoho Mail adds BIMI logo support
Spam Resource

Hey, look! It's another mailbox provider adding support for BIMI logos, which is always wonderful to see. This time around it's Zoho Mail, who hosts mail for more than 41,000 of the top ten million domains, as of July, 2024. Want your BIMI logo to show up for Zoho Mail subscribers? You will need a Verified Mark Certificate (VMC). Their documentation refers to VMCs, and in my testing, only logos with a VMC in place were displayed. The Zoho Mail website's “What’s New” page suggests that BIMI logo support was added in January, 2024. Note that in the Zoho Mail webmail client, images do not ap ..read more

It's time for the first installment of a new series: Tiny Tip Tuesday. And today, I've got BIMI logos on my mind. A BIMI logo, meant to show up in email clients next to a sender's email message, is graphically stored as a certain type of SVG graphic file. Both Google and the BIMI Group website guide you through how to create, export or convert a BIMI logo. Here's the tip: That SVG file is just a text file. You can open it and edit it in your favorite text editor. Here's what I see when I open my current BIMI logo SVG file in a text editor: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8 ..read more

Apple Intelligence overwrites pre-headers on Apple Mail?
Spam Resource

Is this the beginning of the end of pre-headers? It might be! Watching today's Apple Event (September 9th) highlighting new iPhones and Apple Watch and Airpods updates, I noticed just a tiny little tip about how Apple Intelligence will help you stay on top of your most important email messages. They showed a snapshot of Apple Mail on iOS replacing preview/pre-header information for email messages with summary information generated by Apple Intelligence. This is clearly coming in iOS 18. Will it apply only to iPhone 16? Probably not. I suspect that if this is enabled, pre-headers will basi ..read more

Friday Fun: Who's your favorite Herbie Hancock?
Spam Resource

Jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock is one of those musical artists who constantly looked to recreate himself musically, significantly changing his musical style multiple times throughout his long career. While I am a huge fan, myself, that doesn't mean that I entirely connect with every phase or facet of his career, but that's okay. And likely true of almost any fan of almost any artist, is it not? A friend asked me recently, which phases of his career did I most connect with? Or to put it another way: Who's my favorite Herbie Hancock? Here's my top three Herbie Hancock eras, in no par ..read more
