The Soviet-Era Ribs Records I found In My Grandparents' House

I am currently in the process of clearing out my grandparents’ house, which is the house my mom was raised in, in Buffalo.  If you are interested in Soviet music history, or resistance practices in general, you may already be familiar with the advent of “ribs” or black market records that were etched into discarded X-Rays in the Soviet Union starting in the 1940s or 1950s. When music was heavily regulated by the Kremlin, banned music or sound recordings were lathed by hand onto the plastic X-Ray prints by underground practitioners. The readily available plastic was cheap (t ..read more

My mom was approved for a senior living apartment last month and I could have passed out from relief. The only furnishing she has in the living room is an antique chair shrouded in a sheet. Today we took out her collection of brooches acquired from thrift stores, antique stores, garage sales, etc, and decorated the chair before putting them all back in the jewelry box. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Instagram / Twitter / Facebook / Bloglovin'   ..read more

Babos shearling babouche sneakers (℅) Rachel Comey net pants Vintage cardigan  Lafayette 148 Turtleneck Mug by Helen Levi Believe it or not, I don't really like sneakers unless they're either a simple plimsoll, or don't resemble a sneaker at all. This pair happens to combine both of those principles and I LOVE them. Shoe designer Ce Ce Chin (formerly of a line I loved in college called 8020, I had this exact pair) reached out a few weeks ago and shared that she started a line of babouche sneakers that I ought to try a pair. Not only are these reminiscent of a Philo-era Cél ..read more

Vintage Levi's Acne linen tee Sai's vase  Spring's almost here :') I bought some poppies from our local flower seller, which is attached to a 99¢ store. Jevins' beloved cousin Sai made this vase and gave it to me for my birthday last year. It's my favorite thing to put a few small blooms in every once in a while. I love the way that poppies dance and turn with their carrot-y leaves. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Instagram / Twitter / Facebook / Bloglovin'   ..read more

Buffalo is, as you'd expect, quite cold, and DRY. If there is any trace of a breeze, it cuts through you like a knife. The thing about this asymmetric top from Stella McCartney is that it can be thrown over my lap like a blanket if I'm a wee bit chilly, so on the ..read more

The Story of Our Reunion

On October 18th, 2022 I got a phone call from an emergency psychiatric hospital in Buffalo. The social worker on the other end told me that my mom had been admitted to the hospital, and they were desperately trying to reach anyone who could help them understand where this woman who shared my last name was coming from. After 10 years of estrangement through circumstance, I finally heard my mom’s voice again. She had never kept a phone and was lost in the throes of debilitating psychosis for so long. I was unable to see her for years. This time though, her memory prevailed and she was able to r ..read more

Observe: 2 years-worth of catching up on the stuff I fill our apartment with and a couple amusing outfits. • Here are some wares\wears Rachel Comey made these fishnet flared "pants". I wear them under dresses often, especially in the summer months when I wanna wear something that feels fall-adjacent. Here I paired 'em with a Theyskens' Theory dress that I have own two colors. I will continue to explain: I was obsessed with Theyskens' Theory in college. Olivier Theyskens produced these über cool and practical city girl-friendly collections and I thought everything he made while there was pract ..read more

I'm Tired, So Wanna Pick Up Again

trip to buffalo, 2021. I found this Janzen bathing suit from the 50's in an antique mall basement for $5. That's the shit of life right there. I used to type "b" into my browser address field and it would bring up the blogger homepage that I stubbornly keep this thing hosted on. Because in my heart I'm still 15 and this is still 2009 and I'm futzing around the attic with hot lights for some stupid reason to help me pretend I know how to take a photo and set up a camera. Instead I check in with myself, and realize it's not the streets of Buffalo, New York outside my window anymore, where it sm ..read more

Vintage dress, worn open Reformation bralette top Thrifted pants Vintage Coach bag Vintage belt Dries Van Noten sandals I recently nabbed this tan/plaid dress over at OPC in Ridgewood, and it was one of those thing I knew just at a glance I would wear often. Not only is the cotton fabric pristine, the whole thing is beatifully handmade and totally reversible, featuring a double breasted closure. Kinda hard to see from these shots alone, but the tan side has these cute little pockets with frilly edges and buttons. This now makes for two dresses I own that I prefer to wear open like ..read more

After Years of Collecting: A Charm Bracelet's Worth of a Choker Necklace

After a lifetime of collecting charms and I finally filled a bracelet! The sound this thing makes is divine, like what I'd imagine a jewel sparkling would sound like if such a thing were possible. I decided to turn this thing into a choker on a whim one day by attaching it to another chain I had laying around, and I was SUPER into it with my hair shaved! I'll continue to wear it like this with ratty T-shirts :) Here's a tour of what we got, from L to R: Adirondack chair for my childhood spent in Northbrook Lodge A revolver with a spinning "chamber" just about the weirdest cha ..read more
