Cats and dogs dominated Shirt.Woot‘s Pet Love derby, with a healthy smattering of some other, more unusual choices. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I’d like to see get some more attention… Modern Doggy by artguyaaron is really unusual in how far it goes to stick to its geometric inspiration, and the result is a fun, quirky piece of minimalism. Life Isn’t Perfect But My Dog Is by tobefonseca features and extremely charismatic and charming dog illustration, and the sentiment is one every dog owner fully believes. This derby continues through Monday at 8pm. The top three desig ..read more

Pampling’s Japanese Village

Japanese Village by Albertocubatas immediately grabs the eye with the sheer amount of detail on display. It makes you want to dive right in and explore, so I do wish the web store had a zoom or larger view of some kind available. But even at the current size, it’s clear that this design is something special. I love the way it idealizes and exaggerates the outsider’s view of Japan. So you’ve got a view of Mount Fuji, temple towers, nature scenes and distant landmarks forming a background (all at once!), while old-fashioned storefronts crowd together on a brick street below. Somehow a tradition ..read more

Threadless’s I Like My Coffee Like My Universe

I Like My Coffee Like My Universe by tobefonseca is my favorite Threadless print this week. It’s a fun phrase because it plays with the concepts of black and infinite, making the viewer think of them in two different ways- the contained, small capsule of a coffee mug as compared to the vast absence of space itself. You’re encouraged to imagine an amount of coffee that fills that space, your favorite drink constantly available and at its best. But what makes the piece special is how well it has been executed. I love the soft shading of the astronaut, and how delicately he holds his prized mug ..read more

Summer arrived in style with Shirt.Woot‘s Heatin’ Up derby, which collected shirt designs about all the things we love (or hate!) and associate with summer. Naturally, Snoopy and other pop culture characters are proving especially popular with voters. Here’s a look at two current voting underdogs that I’d like to see get some more attention… Stargazing by superteo make beach crab astronomers stare at sea stars instead of the night sky, much to the sea star’s confusion. Pudgy Mermaids by ilikemooses made me laugh with the sheer pride of the manatee’s expression, clearly very pleased with her m ..read more

Threadless’s Funky Geometry No. 15

Funky Geometry No. 15 by CourtneyKM is my favorite Threadless print this week. I like the way it takes a common style, assembling geometric forms into pleasing arrangements, and gives it a fresh take through eschewing precision in favor of a rougher look. In this piece, nothing is quite symmetrical, and the art revels in its hand drawn nature by using the gaps in its shape’s fills to create texture. The result feels much more dynamic than a typical vector design might, and it also has a softer look that is pleasing and comforting to the eye. I also enjoy the unusual mix of colors, which inclu ..read more

Here’s what caught my eye this week… Best of the Bunch: Hello Clarice by SubBass49 is the rare Hello Kitty parody that actually uses the “hello” as inspiration, and the mix of cute and terrifying works really well. Nicest Surprise: Non-Dairy Queen by AcraigL gives the dairy-free an iconic way to broadcast their preference.
